The badge scanner stood before Victory Road like a final question Unova wanted answered.
I placed my badge case under the light, and each badge flashed across the scanner in order. Basic, Toxic, Insect, Bolt, Quake, Jet, Legend, and Wave shone one after another, proof that every Gym path, every crisis, and every detour had still led here.
For a second, I thought about how different the badges felt now. They were not only League permission anymore. They were reminders that Unova had survived Team Plasma, and we had survived walking through the frozen places they left behind.
The gate opened with a deep sound of stone and machinery.
Pikachu's meaning came bright against my shoulder. "Eight lights opened one mountain."
I smiled and stepped forward. "Then we enter together."
Victory Road swallowed us in cool cave air. The path rose through stone ledges and narrow bridges, with old ruins half-hidden in the walls. It felt less like a route and more like Unova asking whether we respected every step before the League.
Alice walked beside me with Absol close at her side. Golly watched every wall and drop like the mountain itself needed a safety report. Eve stayed near Alice, but she did not crowd her. Iris looked excited despite the danger, while Cilan looked like he was tasting the history in the air.
"Victory Road has a heavy flavor," Cilan said. "Ancient stone, final pressure, and the sharp spice of challengers approaching the League."
Iris grinned. "It is a cave that tests Trainers. That is good enough."
Before the deeper sound found us, Victory Road made us earn its silence.
The first slope looked simple until loose gravel slid under my shoes and sent a line of stones rolling toward a lower pool. Alice caught my sleeve before I lost my balance, and Absol stepped between us and the edge with a warning growl.
A pair of young challengers had passed that way earlier. Their footprints cut through soft patches without care, and one broken handhold showed where someone had pulled too hard and left the next traveler in danger.
Golly crouched near the damaged stone, expression tight. "Victory Road is not only a test of strength. It is a shared route. Every careless step changes the risk for the person behind you."
That sentence stayed with me more than I expected. Team Plasma had done the same thing in a crueler way: making choices that left everyone else buried under the consequences. Victory Road was smaller than Unova's crisis, but the lesson felt connected.
We stopped to brace the broken handhold with Crustle's help and marked the unstable gravel with stones. It cost us time, but nobody complained. Not even Iris, though she crossed her arms and pretended she was only waiting because Axew needed a rest.
Pikachu's meaning came softly while he watched the repaired path. "League road remembers who protects behind."
I nodded. "Then we do not only pass the test. We leave it safer."
A deeper sound rolled through the stone ahead.
We found the source in a ruined chamber where old carvings lined the walls. A Golurk stood before a sealed passage, its huge body still until its eyes lit with ancient power.
Golly's Golett floated forward from its Poké Ball before she called it, staring at the larger automaton as if hearing something beneath the stones.
Golurk's meaning came like a gate speaking in an old language. "Intruders cross. Guardians remain. Prove road, not theft."
