Professor Juniper's base camp stood deeper inside Chargestone Cave, surrounded by floating stones that hummed with blue electricity. After Team Rocket's machine had scarred part of the cave, every glow felt like warning instead of wonder.
Juniper had not packed up. If anything, the damage had made her more determined. Assistants moved carefully around sensor stands, cable guards, and a compact trade machine connected to grounded rods beneath the floating rocks.
The machine did not look like the usual trading equipment in Pokémon Centers. It had extra stabilizers around the sides, and several cords ran toward charged stones that pulsed whenever someone stepped too close.
A replaced crate, taped cables, and a scorch mark near Juniper's notes showed that Team Rocket's attack still had teeth.
"Thank you for coming back," Professor Juniper said. "The cave is unstable, but there is something important we can learn while the stones are active."
Golly looked at the wires before looking at the professor. "Learning is acceptable only if the safety conditions are clear."
Juniper smiled like she appreciated that. "Nothing begins until the containment field is stable, and nothing continues if any Pokémon refuses."
Alice stepped beside me, studying the machine. "This is about trading, is it not?"
"Yes," Juniper said. "Chargestone Cave's magnetic stones produce unusual energy patterns. I want to test whether they can stabilize temporary trade evolution without stressing the Pokémon."
I understood before she finished. "Karrablast and Shelmet."
Juniper nodded. "Their connection is one of Unova's strangest evolutionary relationships. Since you and Alice share your record, a temporary exchange between you two should be safer than asking separate trainers to test it."
Alice looked at me. "We can try, but only if they agree before the machine starts."
Cilan clasped his hands together. "A research course seasoned with trust, electricity, and evolutionary mystery. Deliciously risky, but only if handled properly."
Iris squinted at the machine with obvious suspicion. "That means it is scary."
"Scientifically scary, with very clear precautions," Cilan replied.
"That still sounds scary to me," Iris muttered.
Juniper brought us to a reinforced training space near camp. First she would record Karrablast and Shelmet's behavior, then attempt the temporary trade only if their reactions stayed stable.
I sent out Karrablast and Shelmet. Karrablast immediately lowered his horn and charged, while Shelmet pulled tightly into his shell.
"Karrablast, wait before you charge," I called.
Karrablast skidded, frustrated, and jabbed the floor with his horn.
Karrablast's meaning came sharp and impatient. "Shell calls. Horn answers. Why is answer wrong?"
Shelmet's meaning came muffled but firm. "Shell is not prize. Shell is home."
Juniper's eyes widened, but she did not interrupt. "That contrast is important. Karrablast reacts to Shelmet's armor almost instinctively, while Shelmet responds through defense and timing."
Alice crouched near Shelmet, giving him space. "You do not have to come out just because we are watching."
Shelmet loosened slightly, but kept his shell between himself and Karrablast.
"Begin with one short exchange," Juniper said. "Stop if either of them becomes distressed."
Karrablast lunged. Shelmet slid sideways instead of hiding fully, letting Karrablast pass before striking with a quick counter. Karrablast spun back, excited rather than angry, and tried again.
