As Pierre knocked on the door of Adeline's room, he let out a cough to let her know he was about to enter the room. "Do you need anything else? Some tea before sleep?" He asked, scratching the back of his head.

He watched his best friend turn around as she neatly arranged the books from her suitcase onto a shelf. She was holding her favorite edition of Emma, a Jane Austen book Pierre had never read, but Adeline had loved it her whole life.

"No, Pierre. Thank you for all of this," Adeline tried to at least half-smile. "I'm sorry to be a burden," she let out a sigh.

Pierre could see titles like Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Wuthering Heights, The Yellow Wallpaper, and Little Women. She had always loved those classics. Pierre couldn't even go through The Adventures of Tintin, so having this kind of library would be unimaginable to him. Well, at least she was the smart one out of the two.

"You're not a burden. You're my best friend," Pierre shook his head.

"My parents complicated everything, huh?" Adeline chuckled with evident sarcasm in her voice.

A lump welled up in Pierre's throat as he recalled experiencing the familiar sensation from the moment Dr. Martinez had called—to let him know that Addy's parents had finally shown up, only to provide no support.

When Hazel and Pierre had rushed into the hospital room, Addy's father, Byron, had been talking about the way she had let them down. He had also been questioning why she hadn't told anyone if the situation had been genuinely that bad. And then, when Addy had started to talk back, Pierre remembered what her father had said quite exactly.

"Perhaps that's why he acted the way he did. I'm not trying to justify his actions, but maybe he felt provoked. You spoke up, and you wore skirts even though he disapproved. Maybe he had a reason. Maybe you gave him the reason."

Pierre had seen the hurt and tears welling up in Addy's eyes. Even though her back had been full of painful scars, they had stabbed her into the fresh wounds. They had let her down.

Pierre couldn't quite remember what had happened after that. He only knew that suddenly everything had turned into a blur as he had yelled at Addy's parents to get the hell out of her room.

"They are assholes," Pierre let out a sigh, shaking his head.

He couldn't understand it. He was unwilling to do so. How fucking oblivious they were to her suffering, to the fact that their daughter had gone through abuse.

And that was the reason why Addy wasn't in England right now. After she had been released from the hospital, she simply couldn't have gone back home, even though she had been supposed to move to London in two months. Pierre (along with his whole family, of course) had immediately arranged for her to stay in Rouen.
