"Let go!" I screeched as people in white suits took my arms and pulled me along. I planted my feet in the ground but was yanked out of it. I kicked and screamed. A palm stung my face and I screamed bloody murder. I felt a sting in my arm and everything went black.
When I woke up I was in a white room with sticky things connecting my head to a machine.
"Test Subject 3128 is viable," a female robot voice said.
By my count, it took 20 seconds for the scientist to rush into the white room.
"Don't take the sensors off," warned the scientist.
I reached up to take the sensors off.
"Don't," he warned, sternly.
I put my hands back in my lap, afraid of want would come if I didn't pay attention.
"You're here for something very simple," said the scientist coaxingly.
"That would be?" I asked.
"I was getting to that," he said "There's a maze. One set up by our founding fathers. Inside is something we want, and we need you to get it."
"Why do you want it?" I asked.
"That's none of your concern," he replied.
"It is, actually," I insisted.
"What's your name?" He asked, abruptly.
"Harper," I replied "Now if I'm gonna find whatever is in that maze, you'd better tell me what it is."
"Dr. Sullivan, by the way. And information, happy?" Dr. Sullivan said, frustrated.
"What kind of information?" I asked.
"That's why you're here," he replied.
"Well y'all are the fancy Doctors!" I exclaimed, "You open the stupid maze and let me go home!"
"See, that's not possible. It's not just dependent on book smarts, although your IQ is a large part of why we picked you. You also have to be good at puzzles and reasoning. Super humanly good," Dr. Sullivan explained.
"Why do you want the information?" I asked.
Dr. Sullivan sighed and sat down.
"We're in trouble, Harper. Big, big trouble. What's in that box could save our world," said Dr. Sullivan.
I sighed.
"Is that true?" I asked.
He looked me in the eye.
"Yes."
I usually have a good sense of when people are lying to me, and I could tell he wasn't.
"I have some conditions," I said.
"Name them," he said, with urgency.
"You will tell my family I am safe. I will be able to contact them. I will be able to leave if I would like, at any point."
"I can give you all but the last one," he said, "do you accept?"
"I accept."
