Evelin Rose

Ah it was the famous Rose night with my lovely neighbour Nick, we did it every summer. One whole night spent together. It was fun before, but now I am a bit mad at him and plus I don't want Alex thinking stuff that isn't real. They usually come around 6, so I still have time before the great night, basically just a friendly dinner to make excuses to drink wine and complain about us kids. How do I act? I stared at the wall; I do that a lot now when I think about them. Alex and Nick ugh, like a romcom and not the one I like. Grandma walked in my room.

"What are you thinking of Eveline?" She asked.

"Lot and lot of stupid things grandma."

"That good, when you have stupid things to think about it means you care."

"What if I am thinking about my dying flower on the table?"

"It means you care; you have a big hearth, Eveline."

Oh, she is good she has this thing where she reads my mind.

"You know I always wondered how come you didn't end up with Nick?"

"What do you mean?"

"That boy is crazy about you."

"Nah, grams he is just a friend."

"Sometime friends are better than something that just came up don't lose them over some silly thing."

See sidekick.

"Are you telling me to date Nick or too talk to him?"

"Whatever you need." She smiled and left.

Well easy to drop a bomb like that and walk away, classic. Mom ran in my room.

"Come on Eve they are coming; can you give me a hand." She said panicking, you know it is weird seeing her losing her mind over this dinner I mean they have been besties over decades. I got up and started helping. After about 20 minutes of setting the table, she was calm, because mom needed her aqua blue tablelike that was hidden somewhere that matches the white pearl plates was finally set and the dinner may start. They were here Nick, his mom and little sister Rosey. They walked in Rosey jumped in my arms, Nick's mom hugged me and Nick... Nick didn't know what to do or say. So, I said just "Hi." with a small smile. The dinner was going great, but I can't act like I didn't see the glimpse of him looking at me, I was sad loved him, he was always there for me...I...I don't want to lose a friend like him for no reason.

"You know I remember when these two were trying to swim back in the days and now they are all big." Grandma said out of thin air.

"Yeah, they are growing up." Mom added.

"It would be a shame to lose that connection." She was smiling.

"Oh, they could never." Nicks mom said.

I pointed with my eyes to the door so I could talk with him, he captured my look.

"I will bring the next dish." I spoke.

"I will give you a hand." Nick got up fast.

We were in the kitchen; he was standing across from me.

"Eve I..."

"You are sorry."

"Yeah, and I..."

"Don't know what got into me that day."

"Yes and I..."

"Would never hurt you like that."

He was speechless.

"I know Nick, I just wish you would stop fighting I don't get these secrets and what are you protecting me from."

"From pain."

He stepped closer.

"What pain?"

"Of knowing the truth."

He was so close to me I wanted to take a step back.

"Eve, I don't care what happens between you and Alex, I just don't want to lose you."

I was looking into his eyes; they were hurt so I did what could fix any problem when we were little. I took a step back and put my pinkie out.

"Friends for life." I hold it in air.

He smiled; I know he wants more.... but I don't have what it takes to have that with him, but I know my grandma is right I love him too much to lose him.

"Friends." He breathed out and grabbed my pinkie after that he pulled me in for a hug.

Grandma walked in.

"I will be left hungry you two."

We laughed.

"It is coming grams."

"Okay, Nick, I trust you more than her." She looked at me I nodded, that way I would let her know we are okay I know that why she came here not because she was hungry I mean she just ate my mom's famous pasta. The rest of the night was beautiful I can say it was peaceful, we were talking, Rosey was bugging Nick about me the usual. I was happy.

When she put the pinkie in the air, I was relived. Evelin means the world to me and losing her because of a stupid mistake like that fight would kill me. I grabbed her pinkie, whenever we had a fight as kids, she would pull a pinkie because we made a promise to never end our friendship so when things got rough we would pull a pinkie promise to stop the fight. But now I needed more so I pulled her in for a hug, I missed her. It felt so good to have her in my arms it felt right but right now I know this means friends and I will be okay for now. The rest of the night she was happy I knew that she was smiling, and she has this type of smile that you just know it is real. Rosey kept bugging me when will I date her I would ignore her because I know after everything that not something Eve wants to hear. But dam it, I loved it I really wish I could date her, I wish she could be mine, so I will wait I will wait. The truth will come out, even though it hurt me back then maybe I would let it go if he let her go. If Alex just left again but having him back here brings back the image of him of my.....

"Dad." Eve said.

I looked up it was him; it was her dad he was back in town.... great just when I thought things couldn't get worst.
