"I was going to tell you when the time was right." Stevie's heart was beating a mile a minute as she tried to read the expression on his face but was suddenly having a hard time... Harder than ever. "But we've been so busy with the kids and I've been working a lot, and we just celebrated our anniversary..." she began to ramble, eventually just biting down on her lower lip as she started to push herself up on her knees.
He was just standing there, still holding that test in his hand, even though it was so old, there wasn't even results on it anymore... It was just the fact.
"Lindsey...?" She creased a brow, tears rolling down her cheeks as she stared at him from across the room with the saddest set of eyes. "Please, sit down." Stevie motioned towards the edge of the bed, wishing that he would just come a little bit closer... Close enough for her to hold him.
His blue eyes finally met hers, just than realizing how sad she'd gotten. "How long have you known?" He slowly trailed further into the room, not necessarily in the mood, but knowing that she needed the closeness in times like that.
Believe it or not, they didn't argue too often, not like the other married couples that they knew, at least. Of course, they bickered and disagreed, but there were very few occasions where they were actually mad at each other....
She felt like he was mad and though it was natural when you find out something that big in such a strange manner, but it still broke her heart.
She didn't like fighting, especially not with him... Even though they drove each other crazy more often than not.
She didn't say anything until he sat down on the edge, which had her slowly crawling on her knees towards him, trampling over the ruffled duvet and messed up throw pillows. "Can we set this somewhere?" She wondered, speaking of the test in his hand as she wrapped one arm around him from behind.
Lindsey let out a sigh, leaning forward with her arms still wrapped around him, so he could toss it on the nightstand. "How long have you known?" He repeated, both hands falling on his thighs as he glanced over.
Her chin was on his shoulder, hands on his chest as she closed her sad eyes. "About two weeks." She admitted, even though it was actually embarrassing to do so.
She had never, not in their entire marriage kept something like that from him. In fact, for all three of the boys, the moment she even considered the idea that she might have been pregnant, he was right there with her, waiting to see the results of all twenty tests that she insisted on taking... She'd never kept secrets and neither had he.
Biting down on her inside of his cheek, he could feel her press herself into his back a little more. "Baby..." He wasn't sure what he felt, but he knew that he couldn't react in the moment... Not for her sake. "Are you okay?" He casually reached around, hand meeting the back of her head to rub her neck lightly.
Letting one a deep breath, she immediately buried her face into the crook of his neck. "We're having a baby." She didn't know if she was okay, but she knew she already felt a little bit better just by getting it off her chest...
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" He was still looking at her out of the corner of his eye, more sad to see how upset she had gotten than anything else.
He knew that she'd mentioned that they had been busy, which was definitely the case, but not anything new for them. They had three kids, and two pretty demanding careers outside of their home- life was always busy and if she waited for it to slow down, she would have had the baby and raised it without telling him...
There was something else and he could tell.
She paused for a moment, holding him so close that she could feel his heart beat with the palm of her hand. "I was worried that you would be disappointed..." she admitted as her voice cracked from being so overwhelmed. "We didn't plan to have any more children and I don't feel prepared." She added, not trying my make their unborn child sound like an inconvenience, but definitely a shock.
Shifting lightly, he brought his other hand up to her arm to run the tips of his fingers across her soft skin as his eyes remained on her.
"And we have so much going on..." Stevie's voice was so gentle, he could just barely hear her. "I know how excited you are to go on tour this summer and I don't want you to feel like you have to stay home with me." She was crying so hard, there was a wet spot on the shoulder of his shirt where tears had fallen into a perfect puddle. "You've given up so much for me and-"
"Stop, Steph." He cut off her rambling words, creasing a brow lightly. "Is that how you really feel?" He wondered, tone in his voice much softer than it had been before. "Have I made you feel like I have given things up for our marriage?" Lindsey recounted, hating the fact that it sounded like she was a burden to him...
She wasn't that and she never would be.
"No, that's not what I meant." she shook her head. "I just don't want you to feel like you have to slow down for us." Stevie added, still nibbling on her bottom lip from built up nerves.
He grew quiet for a second, not exactly sure what he felt, but he knew one thing for certain... He loved her more than anything. "We'll be alright." Lindsey pulled away just so that he could reach back and slip his arm around her waist.
Her forehead met his instantly, brown eyes getting lost in those blue storms for a long moment.
"We're having a baby..." he whispered, a gentle smile finally tugging at the corners of his mouth.
She couldn't help but giggle, nodding lightly as her tears continued to make a river down her cheeks. "You are the best." She felt that way all the time, but especially in moments like that.
He shook his head, rubbing his nose against hers in the process. "You are..."
