"Guess this.. Olivia lowkey slept with Trevor," said some annoying girl at the table next to me.
"Omg! He is such a player." her friend replied scrunching her nose up in disgust..
"For real, but she literally said he couldn't get...." the annoying girl stopped mid sentence to smile at a girl walking by and waved with a smile.
Her voice very insincere as she said "Hey! Love your hair sooo much." The annoying girl giggled with her friend as the girl walking by shyly responded her voice shaky. And then straight back to gossiping.
I rolled my eyes and looked down at my plate of food. Lemon pasta salad, yum. The food here was actually tasty which is a big change from the usual trash I consumed. The girls next to me got louder and louder with their giggling and fake compliments. I sometimes wish this was some cliche highschool story I was living in, but no of course I'm not that lucky. Or unlucky depending who you ask I suppose.
I'm in the cafeteria right now since it's dinner time and I already avoided lunch. The people here are insufferable, all preppy, happy, and full of joy. "Hey roomie!" my prison-mate says cheerfully sitting down with her food across from me. I ignore her and take a bite of my pasta savoring the flavor. It's more on the sweet side like a lemon pastry, but still good none the less.
She started talking after I didn't acknowledge her, "So I saw this new book in the library which is totally strange because we haven't gotten new books in forever. They never bring in new material and that's fine, but I've read every book twice and some at least 5 times. Which is why I noticed the new-"
I looked up at her and cut her off, "Can you finish your story?" I looked at her with a bored face as I twirled my pasta.
"Oh! Sorry sorry, I ramble alot.. Umm right so the book, I just know the library better than the back of my hand." She smiled and got on to eating her food, which it looked like a chicken sandwich but who knows. I've seen her eating some strange things.
I nodded and stuffed my mouth with more food. "Cool." I said with my mouth full trying to choke down my dinner as quick as possible. The sooner I'm out of here the better I am exhausted being around these ignorant people. I know I sound like I'm complaining about nothing and I know the people here agree but they are just blind. Out of all prisons I've been in this one is the only one trying to hide the ugly truth, behind a beautiful present wrapped with a big bow. They lock up us meta freaks in these facilities where they run tests and treat us like trash. We are kept against are will and treated like lab rats, less than human. And every other facility I've been in certainly was perceptive to what was happening, no one trusted the staff or others for that matter.
Fights would breakout all the time, we were locked in cells, and people would be taken for "testing" and never returned. You didn't ask questions because you already knew the answer. You kept your guard up at all times, stayed on high alert, and never thought twice about the staff treating you like a bio hazard. The only thing anyone had time to care about was surviving.
Now I have been in and out of these places because I'm good at escaping. I've spent more time on the outside than the inside and I usually get caught on purpose. It's easy to get out when fights are breaking out, the staff are always entertained enough they don't notice the few people slipping out.
So this place is very very different. First off, I have been without a bed in some of these places or just a mat on the ground but here? My room is the equivalent to some luxurious resort hotel, two huge beds that are fluffy and comfortable. One for me and one for my prison-mate. It's modern tech forward design, not even all white and sleek like a hospital. The ceilings are a dark navy and the carpet is plush like stepping on a cloud. We even have a window with a view of the ocean. The bathroom is just for the two of us with a walk in rain shower and jet tub. It's everything a rich person would want in a hotel. House keeping, spa, pool, the beach, real and good food, and kind staff. So yes this place is heaven compared to other facilities, we have the freedom to leave our rooms and no one is being treated like they are less than human. If the staff treat you wrong they apologize. But it's all just a pretty picture to lure you in to drop your guard,
It's a nice lie. This is the only prison that functions this way. But of course they have great results. I mean the people here trust the system, the staff, everything. They don't view it as a prison. Most of the people here were born into it, they haven't even got the idea that they could be free outside of here. Not that they would it's hard to leave luxury for a life on the run. The people here don't fight it they just accept it as the only option. The people in other prisons know how ugly it can be and they'd just cause chaos, so they'll never see the likes of this place. No clue how I ended up here, but I'm not gonna be here for long.
My prison-mate who's name is Julia looked at me then around the area and leaned in a bit to close for comfort and whispered, "They said they didn't add any books." I raised my brow and look at her with a bored expression.
"So?" I'm not that interested in her antics, but maybe something other than gossip would be nice to hear.
"The book was weird, it just doesn't seem like something they would allow us to have..." she spoke quietly pausing briefly to continue. I shrugged and she glanced around as if any one cared to hear this conversation. I grabbed my empty tray and stood up to throw it away and Julia scarfed the rest of food down.
I tossed the tray in the trash and begun walking out of the cafeteria. It's packed full for dinner, plenty of people crowding the popular tables with no care in the world. Some tables sat 10 people and others only a couple. Like the one I sat at, by myself unless Julia took it upon herself to be extra friendly. I've been here a tidal of 3 weeks and there's been 2 other new meta's that came not long after me. Which is unusual here, they don't get several new people at once and I've heard talk about more meta's being moved here.
Julia trailed behind me as I walked past the table with the annoying girl and her equally fake friend. Julia waved to them and they waved back with hushed giggles. "Jules you should swing by the beach we are throwing a party." one of them offered.
"Yeah, we can come by!" Julia replied with a smile.
"Oh. No. Not her, just you," the girl glanced at me with disgust, her nose wrinkled up when she looked at me.
I stopped and turned looking her straight into the eyes. "Aww how sad, I was just hoping to go to your awesome party," I said with no expression and my voice with a hint of sarcasm.
The girls mouth hung open for second when I didn't break eye contact. She gathered herself together looking like a fish out of water. "Well.. well you're not invited loser." she fumbled for her words as her snooty facade dropped a little.
Julia frowned and said, "If she doesn't go then I don't go." She put her head up proudly and walked off in front of me and I chuckled internally walking after her. The snooty girls seemed annoyed they had been turned down, but I'm sure they'll bounce back. Not everyone here is living in a mean girls movie, but most do act like it. I haven't gone out of my way to befriend anyone her because they offer 0 value to me. They are a bunch of sheep that listen to their handlers. Now if they could benefit me then maybe I'd reconsider icing everyone out.
I'm positive there are people here who see through the mirage, but I don't think they have any drive in them to fight back. It's crazy to think the people who are constantly fighting to just exist keep fighting while those who don't have to fight choose to be complacent.
I follow Julia to the med center where they do our nightly vitals. This place appears more humane yet that's exactly why I think it's the worst. The treatment like cattle, you train the baby cow to preform treats, make it trust you and then slaughter it. At least else where you know what's coming and never make the mistake to think any of these humans think of you as anything other than a preform circus act. We are the animals at the zoo.
