(A/N: I drew Annabeth's tattoo which she describes getting in this chapter (not a spoiler!!) ;) so I've attached an image yay )
"Day 2 initiates, rise and shine!" Amar calls. My fitful sleep is over, but now training begins
So the next few days continue like this; wake up, shower, gun practice, lunch with blue cupcakes, fighting training, then after 6:00pm we get free time. One night I got a tattoo of some flames between my shoulder blames. Tori did it for me (she is a tattoo artist), and she cleverly hid the image of an eye in the fire. You'd only see it if you look for long enough, which no one will. My naked back isn't something I tend to share with the world. However, some of the flames reach my neck, which looks pretty cool.
By the time three days had passed, I was feeling pretty badass. I can throw knives, fire guns, and I can even beat most of my ex-faction and a few ex-Candors in a fight. The proper battles have started and I've already beaten this guy from Erudite called Frank.
It was just as we'd all settled into bed bed in the dorm that night, when Tori entered and told us to get up.
"This is a Dauntless tradition in which you will all take part." she says, but refuses to answer and further questions.
Tori led the group of transfers to the bulletproof glass roof of the pit, and I start getting uncomfortable, even thought the glass beneath my fight won't break.
Amar was waiting with the Dauntless-born next to a pile of guns. Beside the guns were boxes that said PAINTBALLS on them. Oh, I think.
Other people seem to have put two and two together, but for those who haven't, Amar explains.
"We're playing capture the flag. There will be two teams of which Tori and I are the captains. Everyone grab a gun and some amo, then we'll get on the train." he says.
I hang back while people scramble for the guns. I notice Percy has done the same as me. We each grab the last two guns and a bag of paintballs to clip to our belts, the jump on the still-moving train.
"Okay, teams. I'll pick first - Clarisse." Amar says.
Tori studies the group of initiates then says, "Annabeth."
I stand in shock then realise I'm supposed to go stand by her. The leaders choose some more teammates, then soon Percy is picked for Team-Tori. My heart does a little fluttery dance and I tell it to stop that. He's just a boy.
When there are no initiates left, Tori asks Amar whether he wants to get off first or second. He chooses first.
Our team waits until we're five minutes train ride away, then jump off as the train slows.
"Right," a Dauntless-born says, "Lets hide it on the edge of the marsh."
"No way, Lee. We're going to hide it in the woods." a girl with a large eagle tattoo on her arm says.
"May I remind you Bella, the flag has to be in plain sight." Tori tells the girl.
"What about in an alleyway?" I suggest. "I mean, we could have a couple of spies where we've hidden it, then a group of about three shining torches pretending to be the flag. The rest of us can find the other team's flag, but we might need hight to see it."
Everyone just looks at me, stunned. Then Percy pipes up, "what if we hide the flag at the top of the abandoned building we climb?"
"Yes." I say. Talking like this with Percy in front of everyone is not something I'd like to do, but I'm in seriously competitive.
The team agrees, and we send off the decoy. Tori leads the majority of the team to hide behind a building while Percy and I take the flag to our "viewpoint" and hide it, since it was our idea. They'll wait for our signal.
I'm slightly uncomfortable being alone with Percy for some reason, but I just shake it off and move on.
We break into an empty skyscraper as quietly as we can, trying to make as little noise as possible until the stairs run out.
We're both panting heavily as we stop to catch our breath.
"So...how do we...get on the roof?" Percy asks between breaths.
"There should be a trapdoor...here!" I sat as my eyes scan the ceiling and find a rectangle. "Give me a boost."
Percy clasps his hands and I step up and shove the trapdoor open. Fortunately, it isn't locked. I spring off his strong step, hauling myself onto the flat roof. I reach for Percy's hand and he grabs it, sending tingles up my arm. He walks his feet up the wall whilst holding onto my arms. The pole of the glowing is in his belt hook like a toy sword; cute. Wait, what?!
We decide to hang the flag off the side of the building that faces the marsh: that's the least likely place for the enemy team to be.
Percy spots the other team in the distance, then I flash my torch twice - that signals for the rest of our team to head north.
We decide to hang the flag off the side of the building that faces the marsh: that's the least likely place for the enemy team to be.
After admiring our handiwork, we high five, hug, and sit down near the trapdoor to guard.
"Think we'll win?" Percy asks.
"Of course we will Seaweed Brain," I retort, "I'd rather be in the action, but guarding slash spying is second best.
"You'd do any job amazingly, I'll bet." he says, his green eyes sparkling with Candor honesty.
And that was the moment I knew. I didn't say anything of course. But still.
I'm in love with him.I quickly cover up my moment-of-realisation by saying, "I know right."
He laughs, apparently not noticing anything. Phew.
We sit in a slightly awkward silence until Percy breaks it.
"So, this is awkward and becoming boring." He says, stating the obvious. Although, I'm never bored when I'm with him.
"Well done, Seaweed brain." I say out loud with a laugh. "We just have to hope that if we win they'll remember to come and call us down."
"And if we lose?"
"They'll have our flag, dimwit!"
"Oh yeah." he says then laughs at his own stupidity. He's so adorable sometimes. No- all the time. Shut up, Annabeth.
"We could play a game." I suggest.
"Like what?"
"I don't know. I-Spy?" I joke.
"If you are seriously going to make me play I-Spy I will push you off the roof. Plus it's dark; there's nothing to see that we can spy." Percy says.
"Okay, okay!" I throw my hands up.
"Wait - did you hear that?" His tone is suddenly serious.
"Hear what?"
"Shhh, listen."
Oh crap, I think, I've been so caught up in him I wasn't on my guard, and now we're gonna lose.
The sound of voices is coming from the ground below. And I recognise one of them- Clarisse.
Percy and I exchange a knowing look. We load our guns but don't fire; that would give away our position. I lie down and look over the edge of the building - yes. They're on the side opposite to where our flag is. Clarisse has two escorts: from what I can see, they're two bulky boys with dark hair.
"Don't shoot," I whisper frantically, "even if we take them all out they still might cheat and tell their teammates where we are."
Percy nods in agreement.
Suddenly there is a faint cheering noise from the north. Percy and I exchange an excited look, and race to the north side of the tower block.
Sure enough, a small glowing flag is making it's way down the deserted streets on an ocean of black figures. As they come closer, I see that some of them have multi-coloured splats of paint on them. They wave at us and I grab our own flag.
Percy and I jump down into the building and race down the stairs. About halfway down, I trip, letting a small squeak escape me. He catches me.
We stand in each other's arms for a few seconds, just staring into each other's eyes. I become aware that we're both panting, and our heartbeats are like two drum kits.
Then I use my own legs to support me again and Percy lets go. He carries on down the stairs while I curse myself for not kissing him. I tell myself to get a grip and follow him.
We reach the bottom of the stairs and burst out to meet a team of cheering initiates.
Clarisse is standing a little way off with her two Dauntless-born "bodyguards", when one of them walks over to me and Percy.
"That was pretty smart thinking, you two. D'ya think you can stay up any longer? We have another little dauntless tradition that usually only the ones born here take part in." His voice is deep and husky.
"Sure," Percy says.
"Beckendorf," he says, holding out his hand for Percy to shake, then me,"Charles Beckendorf."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Betcha got excited at that little incident on the stairs? Haha I'm teasing you guys ;) don't worry, Percabeth will happen, this is a Percabeth fanfic. :)
