Adela gaped at the knight dumbfounded. Attempted assassination? How? When? Within which timeframe? She wanted to point out all these facts to them but the newly arrived knights seemed too jumpy, almost excited even. Like they had finally seen an opportunity to show off their powers.
She stood still, arms raised above her head and silently composed what she would say. "I believe -"
She stopped abruptly and turned sharply to the side as a shard of ice sailed through where her head had been a few seconds ago. Her heart was all over the place now, she had thought they would imprison her in a dungeon, give her a trial even. All of which would give her time to either explain her situation or escape. But if they were planning on killing her on the spot, then the game had changed and so would she.
She was trembling and struggled to maintain her cool. She took deep breaths within herself and glanced at the knights behind her - two of them who had broken their focus when the shard flew past her. The new knights looked amateurish, the one in black was who she needed to focus her attention on. Adela's hand went to her thigh and started pulling out the dagger while keeping her eyes focused on the main knight who was now looking at the knights behind Adela if they had gotten injured.
And just when she was about to unsheathe it, the knight turned and looked squarely at her, leaving her standing awkwardly with one hand about to raise her gown. His eyes then traveled down to her legs before looking up at her face again. It was a silent warning that her escape attempt would not end well.
He turned and faced the knight who had nearly killed her. "Don't do that again."
The boy gasped and looked at him. "I thought she was going to attack you."
"With her mouth?" The main knight said. "You could have killed her without her even getting trial, not to mention injure your colleagues at her back."
The boy's pale skin turned a deep shade of red before bowing deeply. "My apologies Lord Krados."
Krados?
The name was familiar to Adela.
"We'll take her to the dungeons until she can get a trial." Krados pointed at the knights behind Adela. "Take care of her suitcase."
He moved closer to Adela who was experiencing waves of relief wash over her at the fact that she had time to plan. He was in the process of binding her hands in front of her when his pocket glowed brightly. He brought out a small mirror with gold edges and a diamond fixed on the uppermost edge - a communication mirror. Adela squinted her eyes to look forward and see the crystal. It was a rarity and was only handled by government officials because of the large amounts of magic it took to make and operate one.
He frowned before running his thumb over the surface of the diamond and letting his magic flow through it.
The message was short and curt. "Come to the restaurant now."
Adela wanted to grab the mirror and stomp on it. She had just barely managed to evade death and now she was walking towards it again.
"Move ahead to the castle, we'll join you shortly."
The other knights nodded and started moving out while Adela and Krados stood alone in the empty street. She had been quiet all this time because of the jumpy knights but now she was itching to speak.
And just when she was about to speak Krados started walking down the seemingly endless street, hands in his pocket and back straight, not even looking back once to check on his prisoner, making Adela wonder if he was just careless or cocky. She looked back at the road wondering if she should make a run for it.
