You didn't take notice of him the first time you saw him. You still can't remember exactly when it was, there was no sudden shift in the world like you'd read in every romance novel. He was just there, in the background of every high school day. He might've been in a few of your classes. He didn't talk much, but that was probably because he didn't speak much English.

He didn't have many friends. A couple people here and there. You saw him eating lunch sometimes in an empty hallway or stairwell, or walking around, a ghost in the group of boys that dragged him along.

The first time you two spoke was after you befriended Edd (or, rather, he befriended you - it wasn't uncommon for Edd to just sweep introverts along with him whether they liked it or not). He brought you to sit with him and his other friends at lunch. You'd spoken to all of them before.

All of them, except for him.

He stared at you like a deer in headlights as Edd sat you down. As you greeted everyone, it struck you that you'd never caught his name before.

You looked him in the eyes. He looked right back.

Smiling, you waved and said, "Hi."

He blinked a few times as he thought of what to say next. "Hello."

"I'm Y/N."

"I know."

You waited a moment for him to tell you his name. When he didn't, you implored, "And you are...?"

He looked away from you and shifted slightly. "Tord," he responded. "My name is Tord."

You nodded. "It's nice to meet you."

He nodded back. "You as well."

And you continued your lunch, chatting with the others as Tord stayed silent.

If you knew then how things would turn out, you'd've cherished every moment he was there, held him in your arms as tightly as you could've and begged him to never hurt you.
