After you got home from the café and promptly changed into dry clothes, you decided to give Edd a ring. You dialed in his number and hesitated for a moment, unsure whether he actually wanted to talk to you or was just being polite. You didn't exactly make a great first impression.
Your thumb hesitated over the call button before your shaking fingers made you press it anyways. Well, no going back now.
Ring...
Once.
Ring...
Twice.
You were considering hanging up, when halfway through the third ring, he picked up.
"Y/N?" His voice broke through, a bit muffled through the speakers of your phone.
"Hey, Edd!" You sounded a bit too enthusiastic as you tried to fight off your shaky voice. "I just, um... I just wanted to give you a call to make sure I got the right number."
Dammit. That was definitely not why you were calling. Truth be told, you wanted to talk to him again. You wanted to see if he was still in contact with the rest of the guys. With... Tord.
You shook off the thought as Edd spoke again.
"Oh, yeah. You've got the right one." He gave a small chuckle.
...Shit. What were you supposed to say now?
A beat passed.
"Alright, well-"
"Hey, do you-"
There was an awkward pause as both of you began at the same time. It seemed like neither of you were any good at this.
"You go first," you offered sheepishly, trying to salvage this dreadful conversation.
"Do you want to come over some time and catch up? I'm sure the rest of the guys would love to see you again."
"The rest of the guys?" You sat up a little straighter on your couch.
"Yeah. You remember them, don't you? Tom, Matt, Tord?"
Ho-ly shit.
"Oh, of course I do!" Once again, a little too enthusiastic. You cleared your throat. "I'd love to come over, actually, that sounds fantastic."
"Awesome," he replied, and you could hear the smile in his voice as he spoke, "when are you free?"
"I actually don't have work tomorrow. Is that... okay with you?"
"Sure. I'll text you, okay?"
Your lips curled up into a smile of your own. "Yeah, that's fine. See you."
Edd gave you a "bye," then hung up.
–
That was how you ended up at 27 Durdam Lane the next afternoon. You hoped this was the right house—you'd read Edd's text at least 100 times since he sent it, but you could never be too sure—as you put your hand out to ring the bell.
You could hear a small amount of chaos inside before the door opened in front of you.
"Y/N!" Edd greeted as he opened the door. You smiled and gave a small wave in response. "Come in."
As you stepped in, your hands folded in front of you politely, you were greeted by a certain energetic ginger. He raced up to you and took your hand and shook it with unmatchable energy.
"Y/N! It's so great to see you! You look amazing, wow, how have you been?" Matt was the same as ever, it seemed. You always struggled to keep up with him.
"I've been good, Matt, thanks. It's nice to see you, too." He let go of your hand and it fell to your side.
"Come to the kitchen, we can talk there," Edd told the two of you.
The three of you walked into the kitchen as Edd went to go fetch you a glass of F/D and himself a can of cola. You and Matt sat down at the table, with Edd joining soon after.
You all had spent a few minutes just chatting, catching up on each others' lives, when you heard the sound of footsteps coming down the hall and towards the kitchen. The person called out, "Edd, I'm hungry-," and stopped mid-sentence as he turned into the room and looked at you.
You knew that voice. Your eyes met his.
"Oh. You," Tord said as he gave you a small, polite smile. "Hi."
He looked... Different, definitely. But not unrecognizable. His hair was lighter and styled different. He had grown a few centimeters. He'd lost the jacket, too, changing it out for a red hoodie. You smiled back at him. "Hey," you replied. He stepped into the kitchen and sat down at the table with everyone else. Damn, you really collected these guys like pokémon cards...
"Tord, this is Y/N, you remember her?" Matt asked.
Tord snickered. His eyes stayed on you, and they seemed to move over your face, as if searching for something. "Yes, of course I do."
The way his voice made you feel put you on edge. He still gave you those butterflies, even years later. Did he feel the same way about you? Or were you just some high school crush to him?
"...So, hungry?" Edd's voice piercing through your thoughts made you realize how quiet the room had gotten. Tord turned to him and nodded.
"I could eat," you said. It was around lunchtime and you hadn't eaten since that morning.
As if on cue, more footsteps could be heard coming down the hall, a bit lighter than Tord's. You knew who it was.
Tom stood in the doorway of the kitchen, his hair a bit disheveled. He might've looked at you (or not, you couldn't tell where he was looking anyways) before he said, "Y/N. Hey."
You smiled. "Hi, Tom."
Tord whipped his head around. "The hell happened to you?"
"Shut up, asshole. I was sleeping."
"At noon?"
Edd chimed in, "Can you two not do this when Y/N is here?" And they both grumbled and fell silent. You laughed. As far as you knew, nothing had changed, not really, no matter how different anyone looked. It made you feel... comfortable.
