I wake up to river shaking me awake girl get up we need to go so we can get set up at camp early we got to drive. after hearing that I simply roll over cover my face with my blanket. I'm too tired for all of this what time is it I question. five am she says with a flat tone. why we gotta leave this early I ask it's cold. that what I said Ariel adds I thought you was putting on ur shoes and loading ur bags in the trunk river says. I am I forgot one he says grabbing his duffle bag and walking out the door. river turns back to me ommy she says using me nickname get up we need to get going so we don't get stuck in traffic u can always sleep in the car. alright I say getting up I head to the bathroom to do my thing I pee wash my hands brush my teeth and wash my face after that I throw on a oversized hoodie and sweats and sum beat up sneakers. if we're gonna be in the car for two hours imma be comfy ion even bother putting on makeup mostly because most of it is in my bag and I don't feel like going through it to get what I need. by the time I'm done river and Ariel already got all there bags in the car so I hurry and put my bags in the trunk. you ready ariel ask me in the passenger seat yeah wait a sec i forgot my phone on my dresser.

i run upstairs and grab it as im walking out my room i see my mom stumbling out the bathroom. i didn't even know she was home she must of got here after everybody went to sleep i can tell shes black out drunk her eyes are closed and she tripping over her feet and mumbling to herself but I guess I caught her attention with my running she turns her head her eyes squint like she's thinking about something. when she looks at me she starts stumbling towards me I notice she has a half empty beer bottle in her hand. were u going she says camp I say like I do every summer u know that I say. ohh so ur gonna be gone for three months u just gonna run off and abandon ur family what you to good for us she says starting to raise her voice uh no I've been going every summer since I was young its never been a problem and no im not abandoning anybody jayda is going to soccer camp for three months the same one she has been going to since she was young and willow is a chaperone and she can look out for jayda u know that. oh so u calling me a liar u think I don't know what I'm talking about she says starting to get closer to me uh I gotta go imma be late.  what do u do at that camp u seem to be in a rush to get there what u drink do drugs there she says getting in my face no it's a school camp we learn and do fun activities I say nervously at this point she all up in my face and her breath is thick  and smells like liquor. hm I highly doubt ur this eager to get to camp just for fun activities what do u fuck people there she says u bet not be getting pregnant there cuz if u do I'm not taking care of no babies. i know that u barley take care of us i say letting my thoughts out and that's all it takes she throws the bottle down making all the glass shatter and before she can do anything else i doge past her and leave out the door at this point her outburst don't faze me im used to them i had to get used to them she has them often. i just know to leave before she gets physical shes always saying out of pocket things and accusing us of random things her assuming random shit used to get to me but now i just ignore her and do my own thing. but anyways imma just shake those thoughts out of my head and focus on camp. I know river is gonna be pissed at me cuz that little encounter took about fifteen minutes. i open the door and get in the backseat soo it took u fifteen minutes to get a phone river questions me looking in the rearview mirror with a raised eyebrow. nah i had a little encounter with my mom she on her same bullshit ah ok she says. ariel and river know about how my mom so when i tell them something they just listen and support. i look over at ariel he sleep in the passenger seat leaning on the window. river connects her phone to the car and put on her playlist and then back up out the drive way. I'm excited tired but still very happy. I end up falling asleep and when I wake up we're parked at a gas station rivers outside pumping gas and I see ariel walking inside the gas station probably for snacks so i decide to follow him. he sees me walk in oo girl you finally up. yea i say good river gave me her card said to get a few snacks for everybody he says cool i say. going to look in the isles after about 15 minutes of looking at snacks we walk out of the store with three bags of snacks and drinks. we get back in the car y'all i said get a few snacks what is all this river asks.  its a few snacks me and Ariel say yea ok river laughs opening a bag of candy with one hand and driving with the other. by now we have about an hour left im so excited this summer is going to be one to remember.
