Date in Purgatory

Anri looked out the window of the train. The beach and trees rushed by. How could the two be together in the same place? She couldn't figure out how this was possible. How many places did Purgatory have?

"Anri? Anri? Anri!"

The girl looked up. Mikado sat across from her on the train.

"Oh," she said. "Did you want something?" He frowned at her.

"Are you feeling okay?" Mikado asked. Anri nodded.

"Yes," she said. The girl looked out the window again. Mikado had his eyes on her stomach. How did this happen? He had been so careful with everything. The tadpole had her on the best birth control in the country. He even used condoms. Mikado had made sure that everything wouldn't go tits up. But here they were.

The couple could see the ocean from the train. It was a nice day in Purgatory. (They left the living world when it was raining.) Mikado figured that they would try and talk while they were alone. So far, none of the girls had to try to encounter him. Maybe they took the hint that he needed to be alone for a while. That thought could go either way.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Mikado asked. Anri turned her head.

"Huh?" she asked. He pointed to the window.

"The view," he said. "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

"Oh... Yeah, it's really pretty," Anri said. She seemed so distracted.

"Is something wrong?" Mikado asked.

"Not really," she said. He could tell when she was lying. The tadpole didn't know how to approach the subject. He knew that she didn't know what to do either. This train ride made things more uncomfortable. Mikado looked out the window again. They weren't going to stop in the hotel this time. This was just going to be a simple train ride.

Speaking of which, Mikado got a better look at the train around them. He hadn't expected old-styled trains to be around like this. Who was he kidding? Of course, there would be trains like this around in the living world. However, this wasn't his first time riding a train like this. Getting Anri to come along with him was a bit awkward.

"You sure this is a good idea?" she asked.

"Please," Mikado said. He took her by the hands.

"It would mean so much to me," the tadpole said. Anri probably figured that they just couldn't keep avoiding each other like this. They needed to try and talk.

"Alright," she said.

"Thank you so much," Mikado said in a soft voice. He bowed his head.

They sat across from each other in the car. Mikado had his own questions as he stared at her stomach. This child would be half-tadpole. Of course they were going to be like him. Tandeki would take the child and experiment on them too. He couldn't get the images out of his head.

Mikado looked up when Anri reached out and held his hand.

"What's the matter?" she asked. The tadpole boy stared at her for a moment.

"Um..." He dropped his shoulders and sighed. "Actually, there is so much going on in my mind." Mikado drew back his hand.

"I'm so sorry," he said.

"Please stop saying that," Anri said. Her tone sounded so soft. The waves and train barely covered it up. She looked down at her lap.

"Do you know what you want to do?" he asked. Anri shook her head. Mikado's eyes moved down to her stomach again. More questions filled his head. He was starting to sense the child every time Anri was near. Would the child's powers be displayed through Anri or would they come after the child was born?
