Chapter 7. Luca Brasi
(⚠TW: SENSITIVE TOPICS⚠)
Vito paid for the food, along with some red and white roses and medicine for Carmela. Alvizie's nose eventually stopped bleeding, but the formerly white handkerchief was now stained red, it looked like it was used to clean up the set of a horror movie. Vito put the groceries in the trunk of the Cadillac and helped Alvizie get into the car. Alvizie looked over at Vito and noticed that he had a nervous expression on his face. Alvizie brushed it off as he was worried about Alvizie meeting Luca. Alvizie played with his bunny plush while the car drove.
"So, Alvizie." Vito said, "What do you think of The Family?"
Alvizie smiled, he loved this family. Sonny was protective and funny, Fredo like Alvizie had suspected, wasn't the brightest man alive, but he was kind and sweet, well, to Alvizie, he had anger issues but most kids his age did, Tom wasn't at home a lot, Sonny said it was because Tom was studying to become a lawyer, and he spent his hours after school reading law books, Michael was calm and treated Alvizie as if he had known him his entire life, and Connie was the older sister Alvizie pictured her to be. Vito and Carmela were Alvizie's saviors, the gods he felt he had to worship, and he did.
"Glad you like it Kiddo," Vito said with a smile. Alvizie rested his little head on Vito's lap, and Vito petted him like a cat. Alvizie noticed that Vito liked cats, he sometimes would find strays, bring them to his office, and stoke them while he talked with random people Alvizie had never seen before. Vito sat Alvizie up.
"Tomorrow is going to be your first day going to the Church with us." Vito said, "Now there is something you should know, but I highly doubt you'll understand."
Vito's warm expression turned cold and sad, Vito took some deep breaths, messed with his collar, and then finally brought himself to say what he wanted to say.
"Father Stephano, Fredo's parish priest.." Vito started, his voice somewhat choked up, "Did something...very bad to him.."
Alvizie raised his eyebrow, there were a lot of bad things someone could do to Fredo, he was over-trusting and easy to take control of.
"He...touched your brother..." Vito said, "I don't know if you understand what I mean, but he touched him..in a bad way."
Alvizie went numb, he felt his lower right eyelid begin to twitch. His mouth clamped shut. His thoughts turned sick, and he felt every form of malice rise inside him. His breath became fast and weighted, and he gripped his hands. He's felt angry before, he's felt very angry before. But never like this. When did this happen? Why did this happen? Fredo was so sweet, why would someone do that?
"You know what I mean..." Vito started, "Don't you?"
Alvizie just stared at Vito, his black eyes filled with thundering rage. Vito hugged Alvizie and stroked his face, he knew how to calm Alvizie down. Alvizie has never thrown a tantrum around Vito, but somehow, he knew exactly what made him calm down.
"Please.." Vito began, "No matter how angry you get tomorrow, be on your best behavior."
Alvizie sighed, his anger deflating like a balloon. He nodded in response to Vito, this new information ruined his mood. The car came to a stop when they pulled into the driveway, Vito picked up Alvizie and had a guard bring in the groceries, Alvizie held his bunny plush close to him as Vito placed him on the couch. Alvizie began to play with his bunny again. Carmela seemed to be feeling much better, not perfect, but not terrible.
"Santino," Vito said, looking at Sonny. He was the only person who didn't call him 'Sonny'.
"Did you hear any word on the arrival of Luca Brasi?""Yes." Sonny said, "He should be here around 7-8 pm."
