Lightning sat in his car, still trailered and off, talking to himself. I didn't have to be able to hear the box blonde young man to know what he was saying. He'd recited the same mantra since we were kids racing dirt bikes on the track with my little sister.

"Okay, here we go. Focus. Speed. I am speed. One winner. 42 losers. I eat losers for breakfast." McQueen kept talking for a moment before shaking his head and continued, "Stay focused. Speed! I'm faster than fast, quicker than quick! I am Lightning!"

Mack pounded twice on the trailer door.

Time for the fanfare. I knocked on the roof. "Hey Lightning, are you ready?"

McQueen started the engine as the door began to lower to the ramp. "Oh, yeah. Lightning's ready."

Here we go, Motor Speedway... here comes the hot shot...

McQueen reved his engine repeatedly as he slowly drove out of the trailer. His car was a beautiful cherry red, golden yellow number 95 and Rust-eze sticker decals on the sides. He reved his engine again as the crowd cheered.

The camera of the jumbotron tracked the car out of the trailer. Suddenly, as usual, McQueen hopped up into the window winking and finger guns directly into the camera. "Ka-chow!"

The crowd screamed but I rolled my eyes

The crowd screamed but I rolled my eyes. I turned on my radio and put on my head set. "Put on your helmet, Lightning. Pit crew, ready. He's gonna be comin' in hot."

"When doesn't he?" The crew lead laughed.

Dispite starting near the middle, McQueen quickly overtook others.

"Watch it McQueen," I said I into my head set. "Mulvihill and Cornfuel, dead ahead."

Just as I said that, the two blocked McQueen from passing. McQueen pulled his right wheels on the wall to pass.

"Don't pass on your side walls!" I yelled at him.

"It's fine," McQueen responded, acting suave.

"Save the fanfare for after, Lightning," I scolded. "I don't want to hear it."

"Come on, J," McQueen said. "I'm the best out here!"

"Watch yourself, Lightning," I said, watching the race. "Hicks is playing dirty as usual."

"Thanks J," McQueen said.

"Welcome back to the Dinoco 400, I'm Bob Cutlass, here with my good friend, Darrell Cartrip, we're midway through what may turn out to be a historic day for racing," the radio beside me let out, interrupting the instrumental part of 'Real Gone'.

"Bob, my oil pressure's through the roof right now. If this gets anymore exciting, they're gonna have to tow me outta the booth!"

"Right you are, Darrell. Three cars are tied for the season points lead, heading into the final race of the season. And the winner of this race Darrell, will win the season title and the Piston Cup. Does The King, Strip Weathers, have one more victory in him before retirement?"
