Lilly doesn't know much about her life; all she has been told is that her parents were drug addicts who left her abandoned in a ditch when she was a year old. Later, a foster family adopted her for nearly a year, but when they had their own child, they realized they couldn't care for two children at once, leading Lilly to return to the foster home. A few years later, her foster home had to close because they didn't receive enough money to support all the residents.
Lilly was sent to an orphanage in New York. The orphanage, in the eyes of the law, received a substantial amount of money, and social workers thought it would be a good place for Lilly to live until she was adopted by a family. However, the reality was different; the directors of the orphanage used the money for their own benefit, always wearing brand-name clothing and driving the newest cars on the market. On the other hand, the children in the orphanage only ate very low-quality food and wore clothes donated by churches.
For many years, Lilly dreamed that one day her parents would come and take her home where she could be happy. As the years went by, she realized that it would never happen; she was the child of drug addicts who abandoned her, and the sooner she accepted that, the better off she would be.
Although life in the orphanage was not the best, there was one thing Lilly wouldn't trade for anything: freedom. Social workers there didn't care about the time they arrived, whether they went to school, or if they returned at night to sleep. Clearly, Lilly took advantage of this and spent her days wandering the streets.
December 1.
Christmas. That strange time of year when everything is adorned with green and red, when illuminated trees and colorful lights dominate every corner.
For many, it's the best time of the year, the one they long for, but Lilly hates it. For her, Christmas is a reminder of how alone she is in the world.
That's why every time the holiday season approaches, she stops going to school. Everyone there talks about their plans, their gifts, the time they'll spend with family, and for her, hearing all of this was becoming increasingly hurtful, so she decided to skip school to avoid it.
Usually, the days Lilly decides not to go to school are spent walking through the city, just strolling and getting lost in the streets filled with tourists.
After a couple of hours of wandering the streets, Lilly feels hungry. In the orphanage, breakfast consists of a microscopic bowl of cereal, and if they're lucky, a piece of fruit. Since she's supposed to be in school, going back to the orphanage means she won't have food because she should eat at school and wait for dinner sounds like the worst torture in the world. She knows that stealing is wrong, and if she gets caught, she'll be in big trouble, but in this case, hunger wins the battle, and she quickly sets out to find her target.
Times Square, the perfect place for pickpocketing, with many distracted tourists taking photos and little bag security. Lilly walks among the tourists, looking for her perfect target. When she finds it, she discreetly unzips the bag, takes out the wallet, and leaves the scene.
Once she's out of the crowd, she leans against a wall to count her loot. A $5 bill and two $20 bills. She puts the two $20 bills in her pants pocket and uses the $5 bill to buy a slice of pizza at a street vendor.
November 1.
"Are you an idiot?"
In London, at the royal palace, a somewhat intense situation is unfolding. Ethan, the second oldest, has been causing certain behavior problems, the most recent being a fight in a bar.
"Dad, I'm young, I have the right to have fun and experiment," the young prince responds, sitting in a velvet armchair. In one hand, he holds a piece of paper stuck to his bleeding lip, while the other rests comfortably on the armrest.
"Do you call that having fun?" This time it's Alexander, the eldest of the brothers and the heir to the throne, dressed in formal attire, standing right next to his father. These two look so much alike that it's almost as if you're seeing the same person in his youth and adulthood.
"Having fun, experimenting, call it what you want." The young man defends himself again. Unlike the other adults, he's wearing a simple tracksuit, and next to him is his twin brother, Apollo, who is watching something on his phone, and by his gestures, it seems to be something funny.
"Look, look, it's hilarious. You turn around, give him a punch, and then boom, you get punched," Apollo turns the phone so that everyone can see it.
Robert, the king, looks at the phone while sighing and shaking his head. "Ethan, this is your last chance. One more scandal like this, and you're going straight to military school." The king wastes no time and leaves, probably to deal with some PR people to help him resolve this mess.
"Hey, I know this time is always difficult because Lilly isn't here and all, but you can't keep doing these things," Alexander tries to reason with him.
But Ethan has stopped listening as soon as his older brother mentioned his little sister, the person he loved most in the world. "Go to hell." That's his only response.
Alexander shakes his head and leaves the room, leaving the twins alone.
Apollo is about to offer his brother a gym session when a shout from the hallway alerts them.
"Ethan Walton, I swear I'll kill you and bury you today!" Their mother's voice echoes through the halls.
Ethan rolls his eyes and runs a hand through his hair while leaning his head on the sofa, preparing for what's to come.
"Good luck," his twin says as he escapes from their very angry mother.
