A New Job?

Vermaz, 3rd of January 1886

A young man, dressed in new brown pants and matching suspenders with a white button-up shirt walks off the sidewalk onto the path in-front of the house. He approaches the door of a weathered old house. The wind raffling his hair. a dark storm rides in on the wind. He reaches the steps that lead to the door, he walks up the creaky stairs. At the top, he pauses, then knocks on the door and waits. There's a clunk and the door swings open. Standing just inside the door is a short man wearing a cheap brown suit his silver hair suggests that he's in his late 50s.

"What do you want boy?" he commands.

"Well sir," responds the young man politely. "I'm new to town and I'm searching for a job."

"Sorry boy!" Shouts the man snidely. "I've already got a wife." With that the man slammed the door. "And I do feel sorry for her, sir." Mumbled the young man, as he walked back down the rough stone path. Off to the next house.

2 hours later

last house for today, a storms coming.' Thought the young man. As he looked at the biggest house he had seen sins his arrival in Vermaz. It looked new with a splendid garden, the gravel path crunched under his shoes. At its end stood a large dark wooden door. The young man knocks and again he waits. "Howdy son, what do you need?" A voice from behind calls. The young man turns around to face a well dressed man with short black hair, he appeared to be in his early to mid forties.

"I'm looking for a job, sir." The young man said politely.

"Well there is one thing, are you any good in the garden?" replied the man.

"Pretty darn good, grew up living off what I could grow, sir."

"Then I might have a job for you then, Mr." The man trailed off.

"Anderson, Sir. August Anderson."

"Well you be hear at six-thirty tomorrow morning and we'll talk about that job you want."

"Yes, sir."

The man disappeared threw his front door. August walked back home that he had inherited from his gramps. The street was dark and silent – people in Vermaz don't leave their house after dark – at first August found this strange, but he got use to it. As he prepared for the night he thought about his family, his family... that were recently slaughtered. All he had left was gramps.
