Chapter 1

Desmine

Hurriedly, I put on clothes after putting on my makeup to go out clubbing.

"You ready yet?" I asked my friend.

"Yeah," she called out from the bedroom, "Did you ever call that cousin of yours?"

Shit. "I'll call him right now," I fumbled through my bag for my phone. I started to dial as I was sliding on my heels.

Ring. "Hello?" a low voice came from the other end of the line.

"Hey Jay," I nervously said.

"What's up kid?" his voice sounded more relaxed.

"I'm back in the states and wanted to ask if there was a chance of spending the night tonight and for the following 3 nights with you."

"What? Why would you ask? Of course you can."

"I'm going to leave right now to go out. Do you think you can swing by my hotel and pick up things? I already had put you down onto my room so you can come in as needed."

"Yeah, just shoot me the address and I'll pick it up in 30. Don't you think it's a bit early to go out?"

"Mm, No. It's only 3pm. boba, food and then club."

"Woah you're really planned out for the day. First time I've heard you so organized," he chucked to himself.

"You think you're so funny. Well alright I'll talk to you later so we can get going. Also, I'm 21 you can't keep calling me a kid!"

"But you are," he laughed in amusement, "I'll text you when I've picked up your bags."

"Thank you!" I mimicked a kiss sound, "You're the best!"

"Mhm," He responded and hung up the line.

I grabbed all my makeup and shoved it back into my bag, "Alaine! Is all your stuff packed? We need to stack it all along the wall by the door so he sees it all and wont leave anything. I'll get what's in the bathroom here."

"I already put your stuff and my stuff away, just the bathroom is what's needed to be cleared and I think I lost my underwear."

"Oh shit, okay. Damn girl you work fast! Maybe it's in your suitcase." I was surprised and put all our stuff into one big bag.

She walked in checking on her makeup. Pushing up her lashes. Her eyes scrolled over to me. She met my eyes in the mirror.

"What?" she smiled.

"Alaine, how are you so beautiful." I said in a salty voice as I rolled my eyes in disgust.

She giggled hard and in her accent she responded, "You're so dumb."

"You know you don't have to force an American accent. You can just be you." I told her as before she kept trying to hide her accent.

She sighed, "I just don't want to be seen as some dumb spanish girl just because of it."

That'll make two of us. I was the dumb American in Spain. The one that was given a hard time because I couldn't roll my R's or mispronounce certain words. I tried my best while being an exchange student since I was 16. I felt like a burden to the only family I had left. Especially to the one that sacrificed it all to keep me from drowning.

Jasper, my cousin, that did it all for me when my parents died. He kept me afloat while still dealing with his own trauma. All he had left were my parents, grandma, Aaliyah and I. I don't know where everything went wrong but we were dealt the shitty hand of cards.
