McGonagall handed us our schedules.

We had Charms first, so we headed off, trying not to get lost.

Throngs of people were in the corridors, pushing and shouting. No one wanted to be late on the first day. Neither did we but being first years that really wants an option. The older people pushed us around so I just stood next to the wall waiting for the crowd to thin.

The crowd thinned a bit and I bolted towards the charms classroom.

Just as I sat down the bell rang. That was close.

"Hello, class. Lets start off by doing the roll call," said Professor Flitwick. He was a small wizard that stood on a pile of books to see over his desk. He had glasses and a squeaky voice.

As he called names I looked out the window thinking.

It's not like I care what my family thinks of me being in Gryffindor, but just the fact that everyone heard that. Everyone heard what my family is like.

"Sirius Black."

"Here," I said in a distant voice.

After Flitwick finished the roll call, he split us into pairs.

I was with the girl that I pushed this morning. Oh jolly.

"I'm Gabrielle, and you're Sirius Black, aren't you?"

I nodded stiffly.

We were supposed to levitate objects. Flitwick taught us the incantation and then the wand movement. After we were given a feather. Gabrielle went first and I watched.

"Wingardium Leviosa!"

The feather slowly lifted from the desk up into the air.

"Oh, very good, Ms Harold!" Cried Professor Flitwick.

She blushed.

"Your turn."

I picked up my wand and focused on the feather.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" I cried. The feather twitched and then lay still.

Gabrielle stifled a snort. I glared at her.

After the lesson we went to Transfiguration, where we were supposed to learn how to turn a match to a needle.

At the end of the lesson Professor McGonagall held us back to show how Gabrielle's match became all silver and pointy. She gave her a small smile.

We went off to lunch.

As I was walking I looked around. The walls were stone with windows and torches. Suits of armour lined some corridors, and ghosts floated about. It really was magical here.

That sounds corny. Of course it's magical here, it's Hogwarts.

"Sirius! SIRIUS WAIT UP!" I heard a voice. I stopped walking and something big jumped on me and toppled us over.

"James!"

"Sorry," he said grinning.

We went off to lunch together.

"Did you see who I was paired with? That nightmare Gabrielle. Not very friendly, that one," I said midway through my shepherds pie.

"I don't know, shes nice."

"Who're you paired with?" I questioned.

"Evans. The girl from the train."

"Oh, cool."

"Yeah," James started off dreamily into space.

After Lunch me, Remus, James and Peter traipsed off towards Herbology, which was out in the greenhouses. It was fine day, with a clear baby blue sky and a bright, warm sun. The forest looked welcoming and cozy and the Giant Squid lazily swam in the lake. Peaceful.

"Come on then, chaps! Greenhouse one over here!" called a bubbly witch with mud and dirt on her robes. She had very dirty fingernails and fly away grey hair that was hidden underneath a tattered old hat.

"I'm Professor Sprout," she said as she unlocked the greenhouse door.

We walked inside.

There were rows upon rows of various plants, bags of dirt and pots, stack upon another.

It smelled of humidity and dirt and fertiliser.

We walked in.

"I'll never finish this before I die," James groaned.

We were all sitting in the common room and doing our assignments.

"Shut up, you're distracting me," said a girl that sat next to us.

"Well move over then!" countered James.

The girl gave him a glare, picked up her books and stalked off. Remus sat there in a daze.

And the something interesting happened.
