My eyes fluttered open as the morning sunlight streamed through my bedroom window.
Stretching my arms above my head, I let out a big yawn.
Just as I was about to get out of bed, there was a soft knock on her bedroom door.
"Good morning, Kayla," Lorenzo's warm voice called out. "Ready for another day of school?"
I quickly got dressed and grabbed my backpack, ready to start the day.
As I walked out of her room, Lorenzo was waiting by the front door, his car keys in hand.
"Hop in, Kayla," he said with a friendly smile. "We don't want to be late."
I climbed into the passenger seat, the familiar scent of Lorenzo's cologne filling the car.
"Lorenzo, is Devon always like this?" I asked him and he sighed.
"You should understand that he wants the best for you."
"Why is it that people want the best for me but to me it just isn't." I admitted.
" I get it but right now he needs some space. I'll be here if you need anything."
Lorenzo pulled up to the school gates, and I thanked him for the ride.
With a wave goodbye, I stepped out of the car and made my way into the bustling school hallways.
Class started as usual and our math teacher had shared our previous test papers to us.
I couldn't believe it when my teacher handed me the failing grade on my math test.
I entered the office as he instructed and I could feel the weight of disappointment hanging in the air.
The principal looked at me with a stern expression, clearly concerned about my recent poor performance.
He went on to explain the resources available to me, like tutoring and extra help sessions.
Now I'm going to spend additional time at school.
I met my friends at our usual meeting place and we had some chitchat.
After school I stayed for awhile for the tutor while Lorenzo waited for me in the parking lot.
"I take extra classes." I explained to Lorenzo.
" You've got to explain that to Devon." He chuckled.
He stepped on the pedal and drove away from the school back to the mansion.
" What took you so long? Devon asked, sitting on the couch in my room.
"Were you waiting for me?" I chuckled but he put on a straight face.
"I take extra classes now." I explained.
"Well, I came to discuss our wedding plans."
"Right now? Can't I get a rest after a tiring day?"
" You can get all the time to yourself after we are done with this." He spoke coldly.
" Tomorrow we'll go and check out our wedding fits."
We discussed the wedding plans for a while before he left my room.
Suddenly and strangely, I remembered the longing question I wanted to ask him.
I was convinced that there was a connection between us but he wasn't interested.
It triggered a memory and made me believe that Devon is the cure.
I mustered up the courage to tell him about it.
I entered his office to see a stunning young woman with a radiant smile that lights up any room.
Her eyes sparkle with curiosity and her long, flowing hair adds an air of elegance to her presence. She has a natural beauty that is both captivating and approachable.
She was probably one of the women who are head over heels in love with Devon.
I was nothing compared to her beauty which made me super jealous.
"I'm sorry for interrupting." I pleaded when my eyes met Devon's.
" You're Kayla right?" the young lady asked.
" Yes." I insisted.
" Nice to meet you." She gave out a warm smile.
I only nodded because I was confused.
" Kayla this is Gianna my little sister, Gianna this is Kayla my fiancee." Devon introduced us.
" Nice meeting you too." I added with a warm smile.
Not like I even cared if she was his secret admirer but I was relieved to hear that.
"I'll leave now, I can talk to you later." I spoke and left the office.
I headed back to my office where a few minutes later Devon entered.
"What was it you wanted to talk about?" He asked me.
The memories flooded back, vivid and intense, as if I had just experienced them moments ago.
"Devon," I began, my voice trembling slightly.
"Were…were you the one I saved the other night when you were being attacked by another mafia gang? "
Devon's eyes widened in surprise, and he shook his head gently.
"Kayla, I understand your condition and how you always try to remember your past, but I wasn't the one in danger that night. I don't know how you could remember something like that, but it wasn't me."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. How could I have been so sure, only to be met with denial?
Doubt crept into my mind, clouding my newfound conviction. Was I mistaken? Had my memories deceived me?
But deep down, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to this. The way I had remembered, the intensity of the emotions, it couldn't have been a mere coincidence.
"The strangest part is how I remembered everything that happened that night when I first I laid my eyes on you" I stammered, my voice barely a whisper.
"Kayla, your memory isn't reliable and you know that." He paused.
" To not worsen the case, I would advise you to take some rest and follow your medication before things get out of control." He concluded and left the room.
What does he mean ' get out of control '?
I was convinced that there was a connection between us even if he didn't see it that way.
For a moment, I felt that Devon is the cure to my sickness but all my thoughts shuttered when he insisted that he wasn't the one.
It was finally morning and I'd prepare for whatever the day had got to offer.
Devon had told Lorenzo to inform me that the buying of the dresses would be postponed to Sunday so I basically had nothing to do today and I don't have school either.
Mr. Alessandro called for me so I went to his office.
When I walked out, I saw Gianna.
"Oh hey!" I said, with a wave.
"Hey, what were you doing in my father's office?" she asked.
"He wanted to talk to me," I replied.
"About what?" she asked.
"A few rules, he wants me to follow" I replied, as we started making our way
downstairs."Oh wow. Anyways, I was thinking we
could go out or do something together"
she suggested."Sure, but in order to leave I need
to ask permission from Devon or his
father" I said."I think you should ask Devon in my
opinion, he's less scary" she said.
