I remember the first time you hit me.
Your apology came quickly after. four "i'm sorry's" in a row so close together I couldn't hear the emptiness hidden within them. you held me with softer hands draped in false gentleness as you begged me for forgiveness.
"It'll never happen again," you promised.
I should've known better.
I spent years watching women escape men just like you but still, I forgave you that time and at least a hundred times after.
It took so long to leave.
