I chickened out. I didn't have the guts to meet that handsome guy again. My head overruled my heart with doubts about him. Who was this guy who could afford to eat at Gramercy's but took the subway to—well, I suppose, work? I didn't even know his name.
Maybe he was some shady guy who was a stalker—I didn't even wait around to find out his identity. I let one of the other waitresses serve him his burger but I saw her gush over the bill when he paid—maybe he'd left her a generous tip? Dunno, but I wasn't waiting around to find out. Why? Coz he was too hot to handle. His flirting made my heart flip already, I didn't need more of that.
Maybe some encounters were best left alone.
So I did what any smart waitress would do—snuck out the backdoor hoping never to run into him again. Thankfully, it had stopped raining and I could make a dry getaway. Unfortunately, I didn't see a pair of shiny oxfords standing in front of the door and tripped right over them with a gasp.
"Ahh!" I squealed, bracing myself for an impact that would break my nose. It never came.
"Nice to see you again, I thought you flaked on me." Oh, crap. I found myself in the arms of the handsome stranger, looking up at his gleaming smile as he held me in a dip. At least he saved me from an embarrassing nosebleed. I quickly straightened myself up, slipping out of his arms.
"Who, me? Flaked? No, no, I'd never!" I squeaked, my voice sounding too high. Smooth, Ana, lying to the guy you have a crush on. I had no control over the red that spread on my face.
"Good, because then I wouldn't have gotten a chance to see you again." He seemed to take my answer in his stride. And the soft smile on his face told me maybe he wasn't some sorta shady guy slash stalker. Maybe that was just my New York skepticism talking.
"Hehe, yeah," I giggled nervously, "sorry I fell on you again."
"That's okay, doll, you can fall on me anytime." Boy, that sure put the marshmallows in my stomach. I couldn't help but smile back at him.
"So, might I interest you in a coffee and some cronuts in return for your company?" He asked, looking expectantly at me again. Aw, gee, why not? I couldn't say no to the guy I fell on twice. He was starting to win me over. Plus, I was hungry...
"Sure, that sounds nice," I yielded more gracefully this time. He looked thrilled like he'd just won a lottery.
"That's great! I know a fine bakery nearby, it's just a block away. Join me for a little walk?"
"Sure." I fell into step beside him, glancing at the puddly pavement instead of his model smile to get a hold of myself. Guess there was no avoiding it now—not only had I fallen on him twice, but I was falling for him, again.
