For as long as they could remember, they were never normal.
Twelve years ago in Sinnoh, left behind by a hooded individual in Professor Rowan's lab, the old man noticed that the twins weren't like human babies; their blood had slight traces of Pokémon DNA as well. The male twin had a note saying, "Nicklaus and Samantha, children of a failure."
Professor Rowan sent them to an orphanage once they turned five, and then the difference between them and the other children became apparent.
They could see things that weren't there.
Their interactions with the four Pokémon could be seen constantly. For Nicklaus, a Pikachu wearing a red scarf and a Lucario with strange markings on its arms. For Samantha, a Luxray and a Heracross. They talked to them as if they could understand them clearly.
Nobody knew why these Pokémon were following these kids, but whenever they were together, a sort of energy could be felt.
Because of this, no other children wanted to get near the twins, but they didn't care as long as they had each other. They were happy.
As they reached ten, the Pokémon that had always been with them finally became officially theirs, and the twins became trainers.
Samantha was a lot weaker in battles than Nicklaus, who was very crafty. Sam began to distance herself from her brother. Unlike her brother, who was content with not knowing who their parents were or why they were abandoned, she made it her goal to do so.
That's what took them to Alola to investigate the symbol that came with the note and eventually led them to Lusamine. From there on out, Sam felt as if she was one step closer to discovering who she was meant to be in this world by finding her father.
Present.
The blonde girl opens her eyes to see herself and her brother trapped in a strange room made of tree vines. At the center of the room is the ghost girl Gina, who is tied up by the vines in a way that looks like they are sucking out her energy.
"Gina!, Nick, wake up, help me save Gina!"
"Huh... Sam... What... Who's Gina?"
Samantha drags her brother to the ghost, and the two of them tug at the vines to no avail.
"It's no use. Pikachu, use Iron Tail!" His Pokémon attacks, but the vines are unmoved. "Not strong enough... If we can escape from here, maybe Neil or Ash can..."
"Escape? Do you mean to run away? And leave Gina behind?"
"Sam, I didn't mean it like that, I just..."
"Want to move on? Forget about it? Like with Dad? Would you have even come here if I didn't drag you along?!"
"Is this what all this is about because I'm not actively chasing our... 'father'?"
Nick's expression went sour. "Sam, he abandoned us! Why should we care who he is? He doesn't care about who we are, or he would have come to get us years ago!"
"What if he's in trouble?! What if someone is chasing him, and he needs our help?" Samantha stomped her feet in anger. "Don't you want to know our purpose in life?! Why we can see ghosts? Why we are like this? What we truly are, he can answer all that."
Nick finally understood why Sam was so invested in that. She wanted validation, unlike himself who only needed her as a family; she wanted something more. It hurt a little, but he knew what he had to do.
"Sam... I couldn't care less about our father... But I'll follow you through thick and thin to find him because I care about you."
"... Fine, I guess as always, I have to be the one leading the search. So, any bright ideas on how to get Gina and us out of here?"
