Elizabeth had been adjusting and readjusting the keychain in her left index finger for the last five minutes. Time was a mysterious being. Sometimes it moved so slow, sometimes it vanished within a blink of an eye. And at present time took the latter role. She rotated the ring several times, trying to place the pair of keys dangling from both sides of the keychain placed on her index perpendicular to all five of the fingers. The meaningless task was almost subconscious, a pointless game, but she was unknowingly yet fully invested in that mindless game at that moment. She pictured the top of her index as the head of a body; imagining the pair of little keys on both of its sides as wings attached to the back of a body. Or possibly the wings were attached in the back of the head of the body. She thought that the body with wings was clad in white long robes and a crown made of green vines and ivies rested on his head full of golden wavy shoulder length hair. She found the character of the owner of the body kind of annoying but she had no idea why she had such an impression. This was followed by another totally irrelevant thought; in an alternate universe, people might be wearing such elaborate jewelry like this pair of keys in their fingers. If seen from a distance, the keys placed in her finger did resemble a piece of accessory. Although Elizabeth wasn't fond of this idea for herself. Her hands were always in motion of doing any and every, and at times useless, random chores and she'd much rather prefer to keep them free of any foreign bijouterie.
Her stare on her key-chained index finger intensified followed by more random irrelevant ideas. What if she was a creature whose fingers would turn into thorns in a certain time of the year? Or the thorns would appear in the tip of the knuckles when in danger because the creature might need to punch someone for the sake of self defense? These thorns were kind of like the thorns of a cactus but in her imaginary case, thorns weren't permanent but a trait developed in a certain season or under certain environmental conditions, caused by internal or external triggers. If people like these existed and were considered unusual, then they might have to stay hidden from the public eye. In other words, hibernation was essential to them during certain seasons at least. All of a sudden she was glad that her imagination never really manifested into reality. What if there was a notebook in existence, where whatever one wrote would affect the real world in real time? Hopefully this book was also non-existent, otherwise humanity was in grave danger depending on the author whoever accidentally or intentionally obtained such an object.
There was this one time she shared some of her thoughts to Marquess Jo Gyu Seong, a senior in the academy she attended, who she was on friendly terms with, and he cast an odd stare in her direction in response. The thought she said out loud wasn't anything special.
"What if our hands had talons-like incisors between each of our fingers?" She demonstrated her fisted hands to him, knuckles protruding. Then she added, "Maybe, not between the index and the thumb because that sounds inconvenient."
Gyu Seong kept staring at her, perplexed. "Could you also illustrate the attribute of the possibility, Lady Elizabeth?"
"Oh, you know," she slowly clenched and unclenched her fist several times as she spoke. "There shall be hidden sharp mechanisms in between the four non-thumbs and they shall only appear when one clenches their fist like this." She repeatedly displayed the act in front of him with high enthusiasm.
"Like say, retractable claws rooted to one's knuckles?" he asked.
"Yes, yes. Sounds thought provoking, no? Like a mythical power owned by mortals caused by the evolution of mankind?"
With a thoughtful expression, he pondered her words for a moment. "I would rather say this sounds dangerous for everyone else living on earth. Even for oneself at times. Also, highly inconvenient."
Elizabeth tried not to show the disappointment in her face. "I suppose you are right, my lord."
After a moment, he added, "How about you write down your ideas? And make stories about them too? Perhaps publish them too eventually."
