"If you had to pick, who do you think would be a serial killer in the near future?"
Leland looks up from where he's sitting, a pen in his hand as he was halfway through writing down the teacher's notes. He raises an eyebrow towards his friends, looking at the way that Ana is snickering to herself while Connie giggles behind her hand. He, for the life of him, could not figure out how they got onto this topic exactly - when they're in fucking biology . Leland can't help the small frown that crosses over his face, as he tries to rack his brain for the solution.
" Ana ," Connie says behind her hand, trying to contain her giggle, "Where does your mind even go?"
"I'm just saying ," Ana says in a hushed tone, trying not to get caught by the teacher, "If you had to pick a student in this class, who would it be?"
"Uhm," Connie says, biting her lower lip as she looks around the room.
Leland can't help but watch her as well, curious to see where her mind goes for this one. And he watches as her eyes land on one man, sitting in the back of the room. The eyebrow is still raised high on Leland's face when he looks on as well, and the more he stares - the more he kinda sees what Connie was getting at.
"It would definitely be him, hands down . " Connie grins, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear, when she turns back towards Ana.
"Oh," Ana says a bit surprised, before she lets a tiny giggle out as well, "I can definitely see why you would think that. He's so weird ."
Usually, Leland wouldn't be one to judge someone so quickly, without even knowing them - but he can kind of see what the girls are getting at with this man. Leland keeps his eyes on the person in interest, and he does try his best to not be so obvious as he watches the man.
The person he's staring at goes by Johnny , well, Leland is pretty sure that's his name - and he definitely was a bit different . There hasn't been a time in this class (or any, really) where Leland has actually heard this man talk at all. Johnny seems to always sit in the back of the rooms and isolate himself from the rest of class. Leland hasn't really paid that much attention to him before, and on the off occasion when he has noticed him - Johnny has always seemed a bit.. Off.
It's possible that Leland was just used to this class being lively, being very involved with what they do - and seeing someone not participate at all in it - kind of throws him off a little bit. The only time Leland can recall even seeing Johnny be active in this class, is when it came down to dissecting animals, mainly frogs . That's the one and only time Leland has seen Johnny be completely immersed in what they're doing - and he isn't sure if he should find that worrisome or not.
For a perfect example, today was one of the days where they were dissecting frogs - and Johnny seemed to be all in on it. He was hunching over his desk, one arm wrapped around the plate that had the animal on it, in an attempt to cover what he was doing - while his other hand held the scalpel that was provided. Leland can't help but watch with curious eyes as the man slowly brings the scalpel down, slicing it into the frog's belly - and he's quick to notice the way that Johnny smirks - the second guts start to pour out. Leland can kind of feel a sense of unsettling nerves wash through him, the more he watches Johnny dissect the animal - and he can't help but feel a bit sick at it.
Maybe he should tear his eyes away from Johnny, go back to his own fucking work; and not watch this man get satisfaction as he slices into an animal. Leland knows logically that he should , but it doesn't mean that he will . Instead, against his own morals, his eyes stay locked on the man, and he watches as a strand of Johnny's black hair falls in front of his face. Johnny is quick to push it away, running his fingers through his hair to try and keep it away - and Leland notices the small annoyed sigh that the man lets out from it. The annoyance doesn't seem to last for much longer though, because soon he's placing the scalpel down on that table - and using his hands to pull out the insides of the frog.
