Chapter 3 - But someday luck will find me
Claire was certain that there was a problem. Cas' entire attitude changed in a split second. It was less evident in the angel itself than that the air around him was charged. Claire was having trouble breathing and felt as though she were moving through something viscous. Claire noticed Kaia from the side and realized that her girlfriend shared the same sentiments. The man from the shelter also appeared a little uneasy.
Chris was going to leave them as she and Kaia watched Cas on the phone. The chickens were secure at least for the moment because it didn't appear that he would take them back with him.
The angel was back at the animal keeper quickly after the phone call. They exchanged a few words before he got in his car and drove off, waving to the girls.
Castiel approached them head-on.
"Hey Cas, did something happen to Dean?" Claire wondered. It was most likely the best explanation for the angel's sudden distress.
"No, he's just angry and rightly so. But, Ed left his children at the motel." Cas replied, his voice restrained.
"Holy shit, what an asshole. Dean's with them?" Kaia cursed.
"He's returning now. Luckily, he and Sam had just left the motel when they prayed to me. Fuck, I don't know what to do."
Claire was quite surprised to hear Cas swearing. The angel was genuinely upset because he didn't usually act in this way. Claire would have found his actions extremely endearing if the situation hadn't been so dire.
Even though he only spent a short while with them yesterday, the angel was overcome with adoration for these twins when Cas told them what had happened during Dean's and Sam's hunt. For a split second, Claire imagined herself as a big sister.
"What do you want to do?" Claire was startled out of her thoughts by Kaia's questioning. Cas looked at Kaia.
"On the one hand I want to be Dean's side, and on the other hand I want to fly to Ed and get him back on track, to put it mildly."
From personal experience, Claire understood that there is no way to prepare for a rampaging angel. Nonetheless, Ed essentially demanded it. Though it was Kaia, who helped with Cas' decision.
"Dean already talked with that guy to take better care of his children, right?" Cas nodded as Kaia asked.
"So maybe this time you'll try your luck with him. I'm pretty sure Dean knows what to do about the girls." she continued.
"You're right. I need to take care of these people who are smuggling Fae from Europe to sell them here, afterwards. So, do you mind if I leave you in charge of the house again?"
"Of course we take care here. At least we get free boarding and lodging here." Claire answered.
"Thank you, I really appreciate this." he said and vanished with his typical whoosh.
"Is it weird that I don't have any sympathies with this guy at all?" Kaia asked her when they walked back to the house, holding hands.
"Nope, he deserves this. Now let's get Miracle. I want to go to the lake again."Sam was observing his brother fussing over the twins. Fortunately, Ed had left some food behind, allowing Dean to prepare breakfast for Senna and Violet. Dean was chatting with them about trivial stuff while preparing. Despite their father had vanished, the girls appeared to be in good spirits. But he got it; he was never afraid when John was gone, even if it was for weeks. And it was all because Dean was present. Sam was never unsafe as long as his brother was present.
Sam was barely paying attention to the three of them, preoccupied with the note in his hands.
When they entered the room, he noticed the piece of paper right away while Dean was preoccupied with the two girls who were clinging to him.
The note essentially asked Dean to look after Violet and Senna and said nothing more. There was no word on whether Ed would return for his kids or what else he anticipated from Dean.
For the benefit of the twins, the brothers had to discuss the following few steps. Sam didn't want the girls to go through a childhood that was chaotic since he was aware of what it was like.
Dean turned the TV on and said to the girls at the table who were munching on their cereals:
"Well, Sammy and I need to talk about some grownup stuff. Call for me if you need anything."
Dean approached Sam since both girls were nodding and more interested in the children's television program than in him.
"Here, Ed left this."
Dean read the note that Sam had given him.
"When I offered him assistance with his kids, that was not what I meant."
After exhaling, Dean threw the paper in the garbage.
"So, what are you going to do with them?" Sam asked. Though Dean would probably not support his idea at the time, he already had something in mind. Sam had to gently prod his brother into it because he knew him very well.
"Well, Cas wrote me a message that he is going to talk with Ed. We'll wait for the results here before moving on. The simplest course of action would be to take them to the Sheriff and give CPS custody of them. But who knows what will happen to them there. No, I suppose we'll have to look find a home for them on our own."
Sam had exactly expected Dean would say this. To help his brother get on track, he would need some assistance.
"Okay, let me call Jody. She has maybe some ideas. For now, why don't you stay here with the girls and I get us some more food. And I think I will talk with the receptionist to extend the stay here for one or two more nights."
"Awesome, I'll write you a list with things we need. Fuck, what if they have any allergies? Or what if they need any medicine?"
Dean looked at Sam a bit lost.
"Just ask Charlie to get their medical records."
"Yeah, right. Here, take the Impala. The next supermarket wasn't around the corner. Take good care of Baby."
Dean threw the keys to Sam.
"Always. See you later, jerk."
Dean gave him a frown instead of his usual reply and sat down at the table. Before Sam closed the door behind him, he took a last look at the scenery inside. Dean was chatting with the girls while they were both giggling, most likely about the television program. His brother was far from being as dumb as Dean thought of himself, but sometimes he wasn't able to see what was right of front him. Sam was going to assist him, but he would require some assistance.
