There were some things Cross kept secret from everyone, even Nightmare.
Things like his past, the horrors of his childhood and early adolescence too great to burden someone else with.
Things like his desires. His job was to serve and give, not to demand and take. Cross knew he found himself in a good situation with his relationship with Nightmare. He knew he'd never again have to worry about when his next meal was coming or if he'd have to huddle into a corner to sleep.
Things like his fears. He'd lived terrors. All of them had but all of them were different. And Cross would never give anyone else a chance to hurt him with those fears.
Or so he thought.
It was a warm morning, a bright morning. A stripe of sunlight fell through an opening in the heavy curtains. It hit his face and he scrunched it up a little. Darn sunlight.
He turned over to his lover's side, patting around for him. A groan left his mouth when he felt the side was empty. Slowly opening his eyes to see where his source of warmth was, he noticed something else close to his face.
There, right in front of him, was a plushie
A cow plushie.
Screaming, Cross shot up and launched himself from the bed, hitting the ground with a loud thump. Quickly scrambling up, he grabbed his boot and yeeted it at the plushie, successfully getting it off their bed.
Nightmare, in the middle of brushing his teeth, came to see what was happening. He looked at Cross, who was now backed up against the opposite wall, with a confused look.
Cross looked at him, murder in his eyes. "Did you put that there? Nightmare did you fucking put that there??"
Nightmare blinked. "What are you talking about? What did I put where??" his voice sounded muted because of the toothbrush.
"The goddamn cow thing, did you put it on our bed?!"
"Oh you mean this?" Nightmare went to pick up the plushie and held it in front of Cross with a lopsided grin. "This little thing?"
Cross frantically grabbed his other boot, getting into launch position. "Get that thing away from me!!" He screeched, waving his boot around in Nightmare's direction.
"Alright alright calm down!" Nightmare quickly put it away, somewhere that Cross couldn't see it. That didn't lessen his unease in the slightest. Nightmare looked at him, a little incredulous. "Really? That little thing did it for you?"
Cross glared at him, boot still in hand. Oh he should've known Nightmare would do this. They were visiting a Neutral AU and they'd come across a field of cows and Nightmare had stopped to look at them for a while. He must've felt how uneasy Cross felt.
He couldn't help them. They were so big and clearly the lights were not on upstairs. They could easily trample you or snatch you up like it was nothing. And those eyes. Those big, black, round, soulless eyes. The way they stared at him was so scary. It was like staring off into the void. The same with those black spots. It was like he could fall into them and he'd really rather not take that chance.
"Oh you attentive asshole-" Cross glared at him, walking closer with a certain determination. Nightmare grinned atim in return. "You, oh you, you, you!" He emphasized each 'you' with a finger pressing on Nightmare's chest.
Finally, Nightmare took the toothbrush out of his mouth. "Me?"
"Out of all things to notice about me! You went with the cow phobia??"
Nightmare chuckled softly, catching Cross's hand with his own. "Darling you have to admit it's a little funny."
"How is it funny??" Cross huffed
"Well they're cows! They barely do anything. They just stand there and stare."
"Exactly! They stand there and stare at you with those big empty eyes!"
Nightmare laughed softly, rubbing his hand. "Oh darling...it's just a little silly. Besides you love chocolate and chocolate milk, how does that work hmm? You know that mil-"
Cross snatched his hand out of Nightmare's and covered his mouth. "No! Don't you dare!! You are not going to ruin the wonderful experience that is chocolate for me-" He cringed a little when Nightmare licked his hand, pulling it back. "Real mature."
"Says the one covering my mouth." Nightmare grinned, leaning over to peck his cheek. "Don't worry I won't do it again"
"Yeah you better not-" Cross cringed at the toothpaste the peck left on his cheek, wiping it on a towel.
. . .
A few years later, Cross was peacefully reading when Incubux ran up to him. He looked up at her, smiling. His blood ran cold however when he saw what his eldest daughter was holding.
Those spots. Those eyes.
"Hey sweetie, where did you find that?" He gently picked her up, trying to keep the cow plushie out of his face.
"Closet." She mumbled, holding it close.
Cross hummed softly, glancing at Nightmare sitting opposite them and watching them with a smug grin. "Would you mind giving it to dadda? He's going to need it when he sleeps on the couch tonight."
