There were days when life didn't seem like life. It felt like just learning to survive. After her sixteenth birthday, there came the apocalypse. Ephreona grew up watching horror movies. But never had she thought zombies could ever exist.

According to the news she'd heard, it was intentionally created to weaken the economy of a country. She hadn't paid much attention to the news since all she and her family did was hide. The virus had widely spread within a day after it came into contact with its first victim.

According to a piece of information she gathered, when a person was bitten by a zombie, he or she was regarded as dead. The virus eats into the brain and moves to the heart.

The heart is then controlled by the virus. During the first three months of the outbreak, she thought her community was safe because it was situated far away from the city, or any town to be specific.

As it turned out, when the virus was spreading, people fled the cities to small towns like hers. A man came from the city with his family but unfortunately and unknowingly to him, his wife was infected, and she attacked the rest of the family in the car. This occurred a mile away from her town.

The zombies then made their way to her town and that was how she and her family ended up living in the basement of their house. Her father had been out on that day and was bitten too...

She had overheard her mum earlier saying it had been exactly two years since the outbreak. She had never had enough of anything or hadn't even had a chance to experience certain things. She occasionally went out with her father's gun which he acquired when the apocalypse was at its peak...

"Hey, your mind is occupied again. I've told you not to think too much, okay? I want my little girls' minds to be at peace, okay?" Mum said while Ephreona and her younger sister, Senah flashed their mum sad smiles.

"Mum, your eyes are red and puffy. You've been crying lately. Don't worry about Senah and me. We're old and strong enough to take care of ourselves. It's you we're worried about. You're our only hope." Senah added. Mum just gave them another forced smile and looked away. They all knew she was thinking of her husband.

Ephreona always envied her mother because she knew what it felt like to be loved. Sometimes, Ephreona thought her mum was being a bit selfish. She never knew what it felt like because all she ever did back then was focus on her studies. But little did she know that the world would end so soon. She was now eighteen. When was she going to get the chance to experience new things and travel around the globe?

With these thoughts bothering her, she watched her mother and sister sleep peacefully. The last word that drifted her mind off to sleep was...Love...
