Jungkook was in the middle of writing his report about the parking ticket he had written earlier that day when the phone call came in.
"Hello? Seoul crime force." The recently promoted recruit tucked the landline phone under his jawline and shoulder while his other hand continued to write.
"Hi." The voice on the other end was surprisingly chirpy. "How are you?"
"Uh, I'm good- sir, are you having an emergency?" Jungkook stopped writing.
"Hm? Oh, me? No. Well, I don't think so. Okay, so I'm a criminal justice student, right? And we have this research paper due by the end of the month about a recent crime that happened in our hometown, and we have to write about the process the police did from start to finish- to show we know our stuff, right? Okay, well, I picked the triple homicide that happened last year at that one strip club; Kkoim? I think it was that. Anyway, when I was doing some research, this one dude reached out to me. He said he was the son of one of the victims- the girl? I guess I shouldn't call her a girl when she had two kids, but- oh! My name is Kim Taehyung by the way. And you are?"
Jungkook was confused for a few long moments. "Sir... if you're not having an emergency I need you to get off the line. This number is for emergencies only."
"But how else can I talk to you?" Taehyung pouted through the phone. "I need info from real police for my report!"
"You can come into the station." Jungkook sighed, resuming writing. "We can schedule an interv-" He sat up straight suddenly. "Wait, did you say Kkoim?"
"Yeah!" Taehyung's beam was audible. "I was so hooked on that story when it was developing, I knew right away it was the story I wanted to write about. And the best part? I'm the only one in my whole class who is doing it!"
Jungkook shook his head. "Listen kid, you don't wanna pursue this case. I was involved in it from the beginning and it wasn't pret-"
Taehyung gasped loudly, and for a long time. "YOU WERE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THAT CASE?"
Jungkook groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Look-"
"You must be Min Yoongi!" Taehyung squealed. "Sir- it is such an honor to talk to you!"
"No, I'm not Yoongi." Jungkook frowned.
"Oh, Changwoo then! Perfect!"
"No." Jungkook blew out a frustrated breath.
Taehyung paused. "Well who else was there?"
"Alright, get off the line." Jungkook snapped. "You've held up the phone long enough."
"Oh, wait!" Taehyung gasped. "You're Jeon Jungkook, aren't you! I heard you got promoted, congratulations!"
Despite it all, Jungkook blushed slightly and sat up straighter in his chair. "Oh, well, th-thank you."
"I'll be in the station tomorrow for an interview! Bye! Thank you! Love you! Oops- sorry, habit. I usually call my mom at this time. Okay, bye bye Jungkook!"
"Wait-!"
But the phone line had already gone dead.
Jungkook stared at the device in his hand for a while, before hanging up with a sigh.
Then he gave a rueful half smile.
Taehyung reminded Jungkook of himself when he was just a young recruit under Yoongi's wing.
He would give the kid an interview, but that was all.
He was friends with Yoongi and Namjoon after all, and he didn't want to upset the couple by bringing up that painful time.
Besides, the killer was caught.
Kim Seokjin was in jail.
Logging off his computer, Jungkook flipped his jacker over his shoulder and headed out of the office.
And Kim Namjoon was safe.
