36. A ride

Annette

She was embarrassed by this sudden turn of events as Aiden carried her back up.

"Let me down."

She struggled against him but the more she struggled , the more he tightened his arms around her.

"I said let me go!"

She tried to push him and he pulled her closer , so close that their noses were almost touching.

Her breath hitched.

"Annette."

He said calmly.

"I won't let you down , I won't let you go , so stop struggling because it's all in vain , I'm just helping you. And no I'm not gonna stand there and watch you limp and make your injury even worse."

He continued when he saw her open her mouth.

"I will let you down only when we reach to the horses."

She bit her lip and looked away. Her hands that were previously pushing at him were now limp on her lap.

She tried really hard to ignore his presence but it was kinda hard when he continued looking at her.

Aiden

He couldn't believe it. She was in his arms. After all this time , after all those dreams and thoughts about her , after daydreaming and wishing to see even a glimpse of her , she was finally close to him , in his arms.

That still didn't relieve him of the fact that they were still separated. He still ignored that part though.

They were almost there and Annette couldn't seem more relieved. She hadn't looked at him the whole time , choosing the surroundings instead and he had never been more jealous of a tree in his entire life.

When they reached up , Arlen and the others were waiting for them.

Jack was already leaning on Annette's horse , looking as pale as ever.

"Annette , come you can sit on my horse."

"No."

Before Annette could even respond and before even he could think about what it , Aiden blurted out."

Both Arlen and Annette looked at him.

"What did you say your highness?"

Arlen smiled sweetly , his eye twitching as he walked towards the same in what appeared as a calm manner but everyone knew he was anything but calm from inside.

"I think you should bring the patient to a doctor first. In the meanwhile , I can take your sister back."

"We have a doctor back home , so you shouldn't be worried about the patient."

"As far as I heard , he seems to be away at the moment."

Arlen looked back and one of the knights meekly nodded , confirming what Aiden just said about the doctor.

"I..want to go with you brother."

Annette whispered , she looked so ready to jump out of Aiden's arms.

Arlen who was ready to agree with his sister was interrupted by Aiden.

"The condition of that patient looks quite critical , the arrow may have been poisoned , you need to act fast sir Valentin."

Arlen clenched his fists and turned back towards his knights.

"Only sir john and his partner will come with me , the rest of you assist the crown prince back to the residence."

He then looked at Annette and whispered.

"Be safe Annette , make sure to rest properly and check for any injuries."

Before Annette could say anything , Arlen departed with his knights and the patient who , surprisingly could still ride a horse by himself.

Annette squirmed in his arms. He glanced at down at her.

"You will ride the horse with me if that's what you wanted to ask."

He walked ahead and one of his knights brought his horse forward.

Aiden let Annette down so she could mount his horse but as she was trying to get up , he picked her up by the waist and helped her up.

Red creeped up her neck and reached her ears and cheeks. She shivered.

Aiden climbed up behind her and took off his robe before covering her with it , his hand creeped up her waist inside the robe.

Annette froze. He held the reins  of the horse with one hand while still keeping the other one on her waist.

"Stop touching me."

"I'm just looking out for you."

"You don't have to."

"As you wish."

He released her waist and held the other reign , but this time he pulled her closer so that her shoulder was completely touching him and she was trapped between his hands that were holding the reins , as she was sitting on one side only because of her foot.

They started their journey back to the mansion. It was almost quiet. The knights kept looking at the two people in front of them.
