After agreeing to keep their relationship as private as possible, they decided to be friends or whatever they were by only speaking on the phone. Meeting in private was out of the question. Their control was already hanging by a thread, even dosed up on suppressants as they were. And Taylor could only imagine the headlines if they were seen in public.

Taylor shook her head. She knew it was inevitable; the media would sensationalize their relationship when it was discovered, but Taylor wanted to keep it private and theirs as long as possible.

Taylor was determined to build a relationship with Jade to withstand external pressures. Her highly publicized and scrutinized previous relationships had left her feeling isolated and overly exposed in the media. She was adamant about keeping this one private, and Jade shared this sentiment.

It started slow, with Jade sending her cat memes and cat videos. Soon, they were texting throughout the day and ending their days with video calls.

The first call had been awkward. They just stared at each other, not knowing what to say. Until Jade had jokingly suggested they play 20 Questions, and Taylor had agreed after that conversation had flowed smoothly.

She learned a lot about Jade through their conversations. She learned Jade was from Northern Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland, as many said. She learned that Jade was allergic to pineapples, that her favorite color was blue, and that her mother was the most important person in her life, with her half-brother a close second.

In turn, Taylor Shared her love of cats, her interest in painting, her ambitions for music, and her mother's struggle with cancer. Her battle with the media coverage and how it affected her mental health, how terrified she was of not being liked of fading into obscurity.

Taylor had never had a relationship like this where the focus was on getting to know each other without ulterior motives. That was not focused on how soon they could get in private and fuck. Where the importance was on the connection they shared, not the physical attraction.

There was no pressure to act a certain way, no pressure to watch what she said, on toning down her enthusiasm so as not to scare the other off. Jade listened to her in a way no one ever had. Like every word she said, every part of herself she shared was a treasure meant to be cherished,

She knew it was because both of them knew that this was the final shot, the last relationship they would be in if it worked, that they could not afford to hold anything back, and that if they did, then it would not work that they had to accept the other as they were if there was any chance of it working. They had to be as open and vulnerable as possible with each other.

And so they talked and talked and talked some more.

"Hey," Jade's face came into view on the laptop screen one Thursday night,

"Hey," Taylor replied as she was getting ready for bed. She had done something very impulsive today and did not know how to tell Jade that.

"How was your day? You had dinner?" Jade asked, looking at her worriedly.
