Yugao stood over her dead lover, his sword in her hands.

It was after the chunin exams were interrupted, after the fight between The Leaf, Sand and Sound had ended, after Orochimaru had killed the Third Hokage.

The village was in ruins, many lives had been lost. The rebuild would take some time, not just with the village itself, but the unity between villages.

Yugao gripped the sword tighter, overcome with grief.

Hayate was gone and there was nothing she could have done. She had lost him forever.

"I will avenge you, Hayate." she said, doing her best to keep it together.

Her comrade placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry, Yugao." he said.

"At least Akane was safe." she said quietly.

He nodded. "You and Hayate have done well to give Akane such a home."

"How can I look after her with Hayate?" Yugao asked, obvious pain in her voice.

"I know you can." Her comrade said. "You must not forget your mission."

Yugao looked down sadly. Keeping Akane away from Kanade was hard enough with the two of them, but alone it would become more difficult. Akane was a curious child, that made it all the more challenging.

Yugao arrived at the memorial, rain pouring down as though the sky cried for those they had lost.

She noticed someone was already there.

It was Kakashi Hatake.

"Are those for Hayate?" he asked, noticing her presence.

Yugao gripped the bundle of flowers tighter.

"Better make it quick." Kakashi said, as Yugao made her way to the memorial. "The Hokage's funeral has already begun."

Yugao placed the flowers on the memorial stone and turned to Kakashi.

"And you Kakashi?" Yugao asked. "Paying respects to Obito?"

"Instead of constantly inventing new excuses for being late, why don't you simply come here earlier." she said.

"I did." Kakashi said. "I've been here since dawn."

"This place." he began. "Makes me think of the mistakes I've made in the past, and I've made so many of them."

"I understand, Kakashi." Yugao said. "I do."
