Hi Spencer, it's Mary from this morning. Will you be at the coffee shop tomorrow morning so I can return your sweater?
Mary scanned the text she had sent the man one more time as she lounged on her couch. The hand that wasn't holding her phone scratched behind her cat's ear as they cuddled up against her pyjama covered leg.
Though she tried to remain focused, she had been thinking about him, Spencer, all day. Her boss hadn't questioned why she had shown up slightly late, or why was wearing an oversized purple sweater with her pair of striped dress pants. Even though her day had gone on as usual, Mary felt out of it for the entirety. All she could think about was the coffee stained turtleneck in her tote and the handsome man's eyes as he apologized profusely.
How pathetic.
Mary was a daydreamer, a romantic. She had spent some time sitting at her desk wondering what Spencer does for a living, why he was picking up multiple coffees in the morning, why he had a bag full of clothes on his way to work. So far Mary had concluded he was either a pilot, a travelling nurse, or an overnight youth worker. Of course these were all silly fantasies that Mary had dreamed up. In reality, she expected to meet with the man tomorrow morning, pass over his sweater, and never speak to him again. However, letting her mind wander gave her something to do.
Lifting her cat into her lap and curling up even more on her couch Mary reached for the remote, switching the channel on the tv to some cheesy retro game show, great background noise. She had finally settled in, hearing the purrs resulting from the scratches behind her cat's head, when she felt a buzz from her pj pocket.
Does 7:30 work? -Spencer
Mary raised an eyebrow, he signs off on his texts?
The door to her apartment swung open and Mary's eyes shifted over to where her roommate stood, throwing her purse onto the table near their front door. Mary could see the exhaustion in her friend's eyes as the woman slumped over onto the couch, sitting herself next to Mary.
"Good day, Lana?" Mary spoke teasingly.
Lana turned over and gave Mary a glare, "I hate the government."
Laughing, Mary shoved her friend's shoulder lightly, "Then get a different job, moron."
"Fat chance, where else could I hear such great gossip?" Lana replied, jokingly, pushing her friend back.
Lana was a court officer. She often joked about being in it for the drama but sometimes Mary thought that she might not be joking. Yeah, she is fully capable of stepping in when things get rowdy, she's not under qualified, but Mary also knows that whenever Lana gets the go ahead she'll sit Mary down and tell her all the gorey details of the case she'd observed.
"Become a priest or something," Mary suggested.
Lana rolled her eyes and stood up to go find something to eat from the kitchen. As she raised onto her feet her eyes caught a glimpse of Mary's phone on the coffee table and a sly grin grew on her face as she swiped the phone, "Who's Spencer?" Lana asked in a frantically teasing tone.
Mary immediately tried to grab the phone out of Lana's hands, "No one!"
"Mhm," Lana grinned, raising her eyebrows, "is that why he's asking to see you tomorrow at 7:30, prime romantic dinner time?"
Scoffing, Mary tore the phone out of her roommate's hand, "7:30 a.m., idiot."
Lana tilted her head, "Well that's not a very romantic time. You're such a bitch in the morning, did you warn him about that?"
"Lana, it's not a date, I'm returning his sweater!" Mary groaned, waving her hands around out of annoyance.
Lana's eyes widened quickly and her mouth grew into a surprised smile, "You dog!"
"No!" Mary cried again, pleading with her roommate, "he spilt coffee on me this morning and leant me his sweater so I'm getting it back to him!"
"Ok now I'm confused."
"He leant me. His sweater. He had an extra one on him this morning and I had to go to work," Mary explained, exasperated.
Lana frowned, "Oh. That's not very exciting. Definitely weird. So he's just some rando? Is he even cute?"
Mary tried to answer quickly but her body betrayed her and she felt blood rushing to her cheeks, leading to a mischievous smile growing on Lana's face.
"This is so adorable, I feel like I'm watching a hallmark movie," Lana gushed, basically giggling as she spoke.
"That is not what that is! It was a coincidence, nothing is going to come of this you're being ridiculous," Mary frowned, trying to sound as level headed as possible but still sounding overly emotional in spite of her efforts.
Lana snorted, "Sure, Mary. If you go to that cafe tomorrow morning and absolutely nothing happens, you just hand him the sweater and walk out, I'll buy all our groceries for a month."
"We'll get your wallet ready, pal, because that's what's happening," grumbled Mary as Lana laughed her way into the kitchen.
Rolling her eyes, Mary once again pulled out her phone looking at the message from Spencer.
Works for me! See you tomorrow.
