When Lily Evans was writing a letter to Marlene, informing her that she will return to Hogwarts a week later, she hesitated. "Please check up on Sebastian for me, I worry his summer was not so great..." made her waver. Should she include it? Could she ask that of her friend? She sighed and thinking that Sebastian wouldn't talk to Marlene anyway, Lily decided not to write that sentence.
What she saw a week later in the Great Hall was a surprise. Not a bad one though.
As Lily expected, her Gryffindor friends were sitting at their usual spot for dinner (and all other meals), right at the beginning of the table next to the entrance, so she saw them right away after she walked in. What she did not expect was that Sebastian Snape would be sitting and laughing with the group.
She stood there astonishedly and looked at them. Some of them looked very different, some still the same. Yet all she could stare at was Sebastian. He was smiling, obviously having a good time. She was afraid that after last school year, he wouldn't be cheery at all. But all those fears went away and Lily felt a smile crawling up to her lips too.
"Oh Merlin, Lily!" James was the first one to notice her. After he called on her, everyone turned to her, excited smiles on their faces. It made Lily almost want to shed a tear. At her Muggle school, she was never very liked, but at Hogwarts, she had real friends. Lily was extremely grateful for that.
Everyone went to welcome her. Marlene and Dorcas hugged her, then the Marauders greeted her, both James and Sirius almost suffocated her by how tightly they embraced her. And then, only Sebastian was standing in front of her and before she knew what she was doing, Lily was hugging him tightly, as if her life depended on it. "I missed you..." she whispered to him.
"I missed you too."
"Come on, Evans, sit with us! You'd like some shrooms or chicken or...? Basically anything, the table is full," the voice of Sirius Black broke them apart as he and James dragged her to the table. "The elves have outdone themselves this year. Is it just me or does the food get better each year?" spoke James in his usual cheery tone.
Sebastian sat back down across them and pushed a plate with crapes to her. "The food is the same, James. Only these are so magical that each bite tastes better and better."
"I'm pretty sure they didn't starve her at home. You don't have to stuff her with everything around you," chuckled Dorcas.
"If anybody cares for my opinion, ditch the main course and dig into the desserts," added Peter. "The chocolate cake is the best, right Moony?" Remus just nodded, because his mouth was full of said cake.
Lily didn't expect her first few minutes back being filled with food recommendations, but she didn't complain. Lily wouldn't have it any other way. All of her friends, talking and joking like always, not making a huge deal out of her. She loved it.

Lily and Sebastian were sitting on some rocks near the Black Lake. After dinner, everyone went their separate ways. The Marauders went to their dorm to plan their "biggest event of the year" as they called it. Marlene went with Dorcas to the library and Sebastian with Lily just wanted a moment to themselves and the dark but beautiful view of the Black Lake just seemed like the best place for that.
They were talking about everything that came to mind. Lily told him about all her travels during the summer. She enthused about the amazing architecture in Rome. She told him about the music in Spain with a huge smile on her face. And for the last, she left France, her new favourite place.
Sebastian loved hearing her talk, that's why he always avoided the questions directed to him and rather asked her to tell him more about something else that she mentioned. He couldn't brush her off forever though and when Lily didn't have anything more to say, she turned to him with a serious expression on her face.
