{{UM SO I didn't really think the whole 'title' thing through, so there's probably gonna be lots of parts to 'The Letter' 😂 So if you're reading and you see it get to something crazy like The Letter Prt. 12... please excuse my lack of foresight 😭}}
Sophie hummed as she stepped off the loud yellow school bus. Turning, she waved to her bus driver, an older man named Mr. Elliot. He waved back with a smile before putting the bus into drive and pulling away.
Sophie turned with a smile and walked down the street to get to the cul-de-sac where she lived. She was excited to be home. Her excitement was especially piqued because her parents had told her that morning that there was a surprise for her when she got back. Coming up the driveway and into her house, Sophie wondered what the surprise could possibly be.
It can't be something too crazy, right? I mean, Spring Break is coming up. Maybe Mom and Dad chose to go somewhere this year.
The family usually just stayed in California {{Thx to the people who voted for this in my lil poll on tumblr!!! BTW IDK that much about California so plz plz plz correct me in the comments if I'm wildly off track 😂}} over school-mandated breaks because both of Sophie's parents, John and Sky Peregrine, took pride in saving money.
They weren't stingy, nor did they refuse to do fun things based on how much they cost. They were simply amazing at preserving funds for times when they really needed it. Because of this, when the family did take a trip, they had plenty of cash to use for big things rather than small, unimportant expenses. In the long run, Sophie appreciated them for it. Even though it meant she didn't have all the same foods or clothes as other kids her age, it did mean that her family trips and excursions were absolutely stellar. Therefore, she wouldn't trade her life for a friend's for anything.
Sophie was still pondering on the surprise as she walked through her garage and into her house. As she walked through the clean, modern kitchen, she saw her own little menace to society, her brother Jake. Even though the two siblings went to the same school, Jake had gotten home earlier that day because of a doctor's appointment. Usually, if the appointment was late enough in the day, their parents let them go home after. Today was no exception.
"Hey Jake," Sophie said casually, dumping her backpack on the ground and grabbing a glass from the cabinet.
"Sophie!" The excitable fourth grader stood up in a flash. "Did you hear the news?" Sophie frowned as she filled her glass with ice and water from the fridge.
"What news?" she asked, confused. Have Mom and Dad already told him the surprise? I assumed that we'd be hearing it together."
"Mom and Dad have a surprise for us, and now that you're home, we can go and talk to them and find out what it is!" Sophie grinned.
"Cool, let's go. I thought for a minute that they already told you."
"No," Jake pouted. "They said I had to wait until you got home too." Sophie punched him lightly in the shoulder.
"You should've known they wouldn't tell you without me!" the raven haired girl laughed. "You're so impatient!" Jake rubbed his shoulder, pouting.
"Come on Sophie, you just know I had to ask! It's a surprise! I love surprises!" Sophie grinned.
"Well if you're so keen on surprises, you ought to have waited until I was back too! That would have made the surprise even more special!" The boy stuck his tongue out at his still laughing sister as they made their way into the living room, where their parents waited for them.
"Sophie! You're home!" Sophie's mother stood up and gave her a little hug. "Sit down, we have a surprise for you two." The two siblings sat down on the couch excitedly, waiting for the secret to be leaked.
"As you two know," her father began, "it will be Spring Break for your schools soon enough." He looked at Sky, who smiled. "And we've decided," he continued, "that we're gonna splurge and go to England for vacation!" Sophie's eyes widened.
"Really?" She asked excitedly.
"Yes," her father smiled. "It's gonna be super fun!" Jake gasped.
"That's across the ocean! I can't wait to tell all my friends!" The rest of the family laughed. Their mom began to speak.
"We're going to be staying with your cousins, Emmy and William. You've never met them," she amended in response to the confused faces. "William is your age, Sophie, and Emmy is a little younger than Jake. We'll be staying at their house for the time that we're there. Emmy and William's father is your dad's brother. Uncle Jace, and his wife, Aunt Mary." Sophie smiled.
"I can't wait to meet them! When are we going?"
"As soon as the break starts. Actually, we're going to be there a little longer than your break is because we want to stay as long as possible."
"Yes!" Jake cheered.
"You'll have to do make-up school work," their mother challenged.
"Awh," said Jake, looking sad.
"But think about it, Jake," John said. "We'll be there for a long time, and it'll be such fun!" Jake smiled.
"I'm only joking. I'm excited to go!" He said. Sophie rolled her eyes.
"Of course it'll be fun, Jake. We've never been overseas! And we'll get to see our cousins! It'll be great!"
