Zoe blinked and the eyes were gone, leaving her staring out the window. She looked around for a moment, wondering why she might've seen the eyes, and then pressed two fingers against her neck, just under her chin. Her pulse was fine, the same beating rhythm as always. Spinning around, she looked at her kids. Kids were always more aware of supernatural things. But Lee and Rose were fine, finger painting to their hearts' delight.
Zoe relaxed and decided to pretend that it was just a trick of the light. As a hunter (or previous hunter), she knew that it could be dangerous to assume that things were just coincidence or tricks or whatever. But she didn't want to scare her kids.
Pulling a canvas onto her easel, she began painting as she tallied off all the things that the blue eyes couldn't have been. It couldn't have been a ghost because her and Dean had this house built when she was pregnant with Lee and they weren't into buying antiques. It wasn't a demon because a demon's eyes didn't glow blue. They didn't glow at all, for that matter.
"Mommy," Lee interrupted her thoughts. Zoe turned around to see Lee struggling to hold Rose up. Zoe couldn't figure out what the problem was until she realized that Rose's shirt wasn't supposed to be red.
"Oops," Rose squeaked.
Zoe smiled and then started laughing. Kids. They really kept her on her toes. Lifting Rose out of Lee's hands, Zoe instructed Lee to go open doors and start a bath running. Rose laughed giddily as Zoe trailed a streak of the red paint down her nose.
"You sure know how to make a mess," Zoe told her.
After Zoe bathed her paint covered kids, she made them macaroni and cheese for lunch. After lunch, she put her kids down for a nap. Lee didn't really nap anymore and mostly just read or played in his bed. Rose, however, would be a complete mess if she didn't get an afternoon nap.
With her kids in bed, Zoe did some laundry, making sure to really wash out all the paint clothes. She straightened up her house next and then hopped in the shower.
Zoe stepped out of the shower and into the steamy bathroom, wrapping a towel around her wet body.
Drying off, she pulled on a pair of leggings and a t-shirt. She looked up into the mirror to see the blue eyes staring back at her. She spun around to see that there was nobody there. What was happening? She pressed her fingers to her temples and squeezed her eyes shut. She needed to tell Dean. What was she doing, pretending that it was just coincidence? Whatever was happening...she needed to do something about it.
She left the bathroom and made her way around the house, checking that all the devil's traps were intact and that the silver handles and window frames were doing their job. When she saw that everything was in order, she relaxed a little bit more and sank into the couch with a granola bar.
She slipped her phone out of her pocket and stared at it for a minute. She wanted to text Dean about what was going on but he was in the middle of a hunt and she didn't want to distract him from that and get him hurt. So, instead of straight up telling him, she just said:
Hey, babe, call me when you can.
Only seconds later, her phone was buzzing and 'Hubby' lit up the screen with a picture of Dean eating pie behind it. Zoe smiled and slid the answer button across the screen.
"I said when you could, Dean," Zoe said. "Aren't you on a hunt with Sam?"
"Yeah, I thought that too," Dean answered. "Sam just needed help ganking a vamp nest. It was easy; I'm on my way home now. I just stopped here at, uh, Sherri's Diner for some pie. What do you need? Is everything okay? How are the kids?"
Zoe couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face. "They're fine. They missed you this morning." Zoe sighed. "I miss you."
"I mish oo, too," Dean responded around a mouthful of pie. He swallowed. "What did you need?"
"I, uh...I can wait 'till you get home. It's fine."
"Moooooooommy," Lee called from his bedroom.
"Are you sure, babe?" Dean asked.
"Yeah. Lee's calling for me now so I gotta go," Zoe told him. "I love you."
"I love you too. I'll see you soon."
When Zoe went into Lee's room, he was bouncing in his bed, hanging onto the bars of his toddler bed with one hand and shoving his other hand in his mouth. "MommyMommyMommyMommy," Lee chanted as she walked in, letting a hand fall out of his mouth and smiling goofily.
"Hey, sweetie," Zoe grinned, lifting her son out of his bed.
"I gotta go potty," Lee said, doing the awkward potty dance that was popular for most five year olds.
She took her son to the bathroom and then got her daughter out of her crib. Rose was potty training at the moment and also had to go to the bathroom after she woke up.
Zoe played Legos with her kids for a while and then had to start getting dinner ready. Spaghetti was easy and also delicious.
Dinner was quick and her kids gobbled it up. While Zoe was cleaning up dinner, she let her kids go back and play with the Legos. She turned on her music, playing Fall Out Boy while she was doing the dishes.
And I love the way you hurt me
It's irresistible, yeah
I love the way, I love the way
I love the way you hurt me, baby
I love the way, I love the way
I love the way you hurt me, baby
Zoe's singing caught in her throat when a pair of lips pressed against the curve of her neck and her shoulder. She froze and sighed when arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her back against a warm body.
"Told you I"d be home soon," Dean's voice whispered in her ear.
Zoe reached back and pressed a hand against Dean's cheek. "How was it?"
"Good but I missed you," he mumbled, kissing along her jaw.
"Did you say hi to the kids?"
He shook his head. "I came in the back door to surprise you guys." He sighed. "Happy anniversary."
Zoe dried her hands off on the towel next to the sink and then spun around to face Dean. "They missed you so you should probably say hi. And, now that I think about it, you should probably put them to bed as well."
"Only so long as you put me to bed," Dean winked at her before kissing her again and then turning and leaving the kitchen.
