hanbyeon stepped on the train, being the last from his family to do so. the wagon seemed bigger on the inside than on the outside. the interior itself was quite modern, and simple. shades of grey, white and blue dominated the space, it felt futuristic even.
but when hanbyeon looked up at the ceiling he couldn't help but stop and stare. on the ceiling was a drawing of an old train, all in shades of red and brown, the details drawn across in gold.in that moment he was greatful his family chose a train ride for this trip, and even more greatful they chose to upgrade their tickets from normal ones to pearl ones.
from what he understood, normal tickets didn't allow you to choose your 'roommates' for the week, you stepped on the train with no clue what to expect, and had to deal with it.
in addition to that, they were probably less comfortable."hanbyeon, you have your ticket right?" he heard his mother speak, pulling him from his thoughts. "the train conductor is asking to see it" behind her he noticed a man waiting. he searched the ticket in his pockets, and found it in his right one. he nodded to his mother before approaching the conductor, handing him the small piece of paper.
"did you buy the tickets together or separately?" the conductor examined the tickets carefully. "is there a problem with them? I'm sure we payed-" a worried tone in his mother's voice. "ma'am did you buy the tickets separately or as a group."
she looked over to hanbyeon, and then again to the conductor. "we bought them together, in the website" "there seems to be a problem with your youngest son's ticket. it appears you didn't buy him a pearl ticket, he needs to come with me"hanbyeon's hands travelled to his neck nervously. this was not how he planned the trip to go.
his family objected, holding him close- not letting him go with the man. "i'm sorry, rules are rules. there is nothing i can do to change them. and think about it that way- it must be fate on this train"
hanbyeon was stressed. he didn't want to go with the conductor yet nothing they said convinced him.maybe he had to go, and it really was fate.
"eomma, i will be okay. i promise. its just one week... and we'll be on the same train just.. different wagons"
his voice was quiet, unsure. but it was enough to convince his family to let go.
hesitant and slightly afraid, he went with the man.~~~~~~~~~
seo yeohyun entered an empty wagon.
it was quite dark inside, only a few rays of light entered through the closed curtains.
he stepped over to the nearest light switch, flipping it on.
he looked around the wagon, getting familiar with his 'home' for the next week. he walked farther inside the space, scanning the room with his eyes. his steps echoing in his ears.every breath he took sounded louder than usual, he assumed it was the thought of waiting for other people to arrive, of being alone for now.
in the room were three sets of bunk beds, a closet and one small table with three chairs.
as he went to place his backpack on one of the top beds, he noticed none of the beds had bed sheets or blankets on them,
only pillows. he thought it was weird, but assumed the beddings were in the closet probably.
yeohyun took off his shoes, placed them neatly in the nearest corner, he put his backpack next to them and took a moment to thin- what will he be doing next?he scanned the room some more before deciding to make his bed and lay down.
he made his way to the closet, where he found plain white sheets and thin blankets wrapped up in sets.
the closet looked too neat, too empty. he found it somewhat disturbing.
he threw a set on each bed before making his way to his bed,
he made the bed quickly, wanting nothing more than to sink into the bed and process the journey he's about to go through.but just as he went to lay down- yeohyun heard the doors of the wagon open.
~~~~~~~
yeohyun got up to a sitting position, his head turning quickly to the source of the creaking sound. he was surprised by the sudden noise, but soon the surprised was overshadowed by a wave of stress. his chest felt tight and whole body felt cold, he didn't know what happens next.
his eyes trailed around the room for a few seconds, not wanting to know, before finally finding the stranger’s eyes.
it felt like a movie scene, the world stopped around them as two strangers locked eyes for a moment that to them lasted almost forever. maybe the stories about the train are true?
it might’ve been his mind playing tricks on him, telling him he’s feeling a connection to the girl because of the train, because they’re wagon-mates. however yeohyun really felt a bond connecting him to the person standing at the entrance
“this one has spots left right? all the other wagons i've entered were full” her voice shook him from his thoughts. “oh- uh- hi, sorry? oh yeah, i'm the only one here so far” his voice a bit hesitating and quiet.a girl who seemed around his age entered the wagon. she had a small blue suitcase and a handbag covered in pins. she didn't look around for more thann three seconds, probably seeing many similar wagons before this one.
she placed her suitcase next to the closet and approached a an empty bed. her actions were rough, a little bit careless, a little bit messy. she threw her backpack on the bed, took her shoes off and sat down.
she didn't sit on a bed connected to yeohyun's, still trying to keep some distane. however she didn't want to be impolite.“i'm minnie” she was confident in her words, but there was another layer to her voice. anxiousness? concern? fright? yeohyun couldn't quite place his finger on it yet.
“yeohyun” his voice was calmer, warm. he was trying his best to make a good first impression on the minnie, hoping she won't hate him in the following week.
“so uh minnie, how are you?’
“considering the fact i should be on a train to all saint's island and there is nothing to do about it? absolutely incredible! and you?” she was bitter. nothing could've hidden it anymore. she didn't want to be on that train.
it wasn't meant to be.
“i, think I'm okay? um- im sorry-” his voice got smaller and quieter as he spoke, sounding more and more apologetic.
afterwards, came silence. long awkward silence. they heard every breath and sigh, every muffle of yeohyun's bedsheets, or minnie playing with her bangs. it was a loud kind of silence.suddenly a voice spoke through the train's speakers system.
“train leaving the station”
move. they were going to move. their journey begins.
the emotions were mixed, excitement? fear? anxiety? it was all at once and non of them at the same time, they felt something new.
it was a beginning.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
