6:30AMThe alarm clock's persistent beeping infiltrated the quiet sanctuary of my room, heralding the beginning of another day. Sunlight filtered through the slats of my curtains, casting a warm glow on the small apartment that doubled as my haven. Wearily, I rose from the embrace of my sheets, ready to embrace the routine that defined my life. In the shared kitchen, the scent of brewing coffee mingled with the promise of a new day. Ji-eun, my partner in nursing and antics, sat perched on a stool, her eyes dancing with mischief as she surveyed me. I giggle and looked over at Ji-eun
"Good morning, Lily! Ready to save lives and dodge rogue bedpans?" Ji-eun greeted, a mock salute accompanying her words.
I managed a half-smile, my scrubs already becoming a second skin. "More like ready to face the daily chaos. Any surprises awaiting us today?" I managed a half-smile, my scrubs already becoming a second skin. "More like ready to face the daily chaos. Any surprises awaiting us today?" Ji-eun leaned in, her voice lowered as though sharing classified information. "Rumor has it, there's a new patient in Room 302. They say he's reciting Shakespearean soliloquies and insists on having classical music as his daily prescription. You might want to bring your Juliet vibes." I raised an eyebrow, a smirk forming. "Shakespeare in a hospital room? Sounds like a K-drama plot. I'll believe it when I see it."
Laughter echoed through the apartment as we finished our coffee and gathered our belongings. Ji-eun's energy was infectious, a much-needed boost before facing the whirlwind of the hospital. We navigated the early morning streets, a dynamic duo ready for another day of saving lives. Seoul General Hospital greeted us with its familiar hustle and bustle, a symphony of beepings, footsteps, and distant conversations.
As we donned our scrubs, Ji-eun continued her animated tales of the mysterious Room 302 patient—his poetic inclinations, his love for classical music, and the way he'd allegedly serenaded a nurse with Shakespearean verses. "He's like our very own Shakespearean hero," Ji-eun declared with a mischievous glint. "Maybe he's secretly a prince, waiting for his nurse to rescue him from the medical woes."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "In our world, the only royalty we deal with wears gowns and answers to 'Doctor.' But who knows? Today might bring its own brand of surprises."
The hospital corridors became our stage, and as we moved through them, the rhythm of our routine unfolded. Patients were tended to, charts were updated, and the day progressed in its expected cadence. Ji-eun's vibrant presence made the mundane moments memorable, turning routine tasks into opportunities for laughter. In the break room, between sips of coffee and bites of hastily packed lunches, Ji-eun shared her latest scheme to entertain the staff.
