All was calm despite the colourful town. Streets were painted with bright hues and trees were strangled with party lights. Buildings were built in an interesting abstract; cheerful colours scream in people's eyeballs and funky structures looked like a block tower. Not a single workplace could be found in this town. All of them were just arcades, concerts, parks and even entertainment centres. There seemed to be no time for work, no time for chores and no time for being serious. It was like this town was deliberately for toddlers.
Welcome to Playground.
A couple of demons stride along the pathways of the slightly decorated road. They looked as if they were in their 30s or 40s. However, both seemed to have forgotten their child phrase as they happily licked their mint chocolate ice creams.
"Man, the ice cream is good," one said, looking at the other.
"I know, right," the other agreed, "we should visit them more often!"
"You know... I have something to tell you..."
She blushed as she looked at her partner. Her eyes were darted towards the floor. The male demon looked at her with open eyes, waiting for her response.
"Well... I know it has been a year since I met you..." she whispered, looking directly at him, "but I love-"
She was interrupted by a splat of watery dirt that covered her face like a marshmallow in a chocolate fountain. Immediately, she wiped the dirt from her face. The passing demon circled the couple before striking a cheeky grin. As always, he was wearing a helmet, obviously due to safety. He had luminous red 'bull' horns sticking on each side of the robust head accessory. He wore a drenched sleeveless red shirt and had been out for a while. He kicked his black and red skateboard up to his arms.
"Sorry, my bad," he quickly said in a cheerful tone before kicking back onto his skateboard again.
The demon wiped the grey water off her face before giving the energetic 'child' a dirty look. The male demon puts his hands over his crush's, reassuring her so that her anger wouldn't carry out the problem further.
"Don't worry about him..." he said in a soft voice, "there is nothing we can do about it..."
"What do you mean?" she asked, recollecting herself.
"It's him," he continued, looking at the skating demon as he attempted to do a trick on a ledge, "the troublemaker we all know in this town... Since you are new, you probably see him around here,"
"Him?" she said, looking at him with disbelief, "the one who decided to skate near the muddy water?"
"Correct,"
"Who even is he?"
He sighed as he looked at that cheeky demon, the one with a mischievous grin and an enthusiastic tone in his laughs.
"His name... is Skateboard..."
Finally, the afternoon arrived. The burning sun yawned as it slowly descended the invisible stairs and painted a red and yellow trail in the sky. The heaviness was present in his knees. Skateboard walked on both of his feet. It has been a while since he has travelled on foot. He stared at the graffiti painted on the concrete walls. It was like a dreamtime story, starring figures in what looks like a battlefield. The figures seemed to be dancing in his head, creating a film of what might have happened in there. Yellow and purple figures separated two sides like a war between them. Despite the dark plot of the painting, the use of hue made it seem like home to him. He smiled warmly, admiring the bright colours of art.
"Yo! Skate!"
He snapped out of his thoughts and turned around. After seconds of processing his thoughts, he smiled wider as he saw who it was.
"What's up, Boombox?"
The demon smiled. He wore a green shirt with a playful attire tied around his neck. He stood with his back straight, twitching at the constant rhythm of his music machine. He had huge greenhorns that swirled around and pointed to the sky. His green circular eyes gleamed on his visor.
"How did your blog go?" he asked with cheer.
Skateboard stretched his arms before smiling at Boombox.
"Oh, you know as always," he says with a grin, "just awesome tricks! Everyone loves all those videos,"
"Glad to hear!" Boombox replied, putting his heavy boombox over his shoulders, "want to get some refreshments at Slingshot's"
"That sounds great!" Skateboard replied.
The two goobers collected themselves as they walked along the long streets. At the end of Playground, there is a single bus stop. It was small, but it was busy. There would at least be 3 demons waiting at the tiny station daily. Skateboard sat on the metal seat while Boombox lay on the dusty concrete.
The red-horned demon looked beside him and saw other three playground resident waiting for their stop. He turned towards them and gave them a soft smirk. They blinked before looking away from him as if he wasn't there. That doesn't stop this oblivious motherfucker though.
"Hey! You going to the Crossroads as well?" he asked with a bit of accent.
Silence filled the air between them.
"Well because uh... Me too," Skateboard added awkwardly, "if you do, then make sure to check out my friend's cafe! He sells excellent coffee there!"
Still... No response from the speechless pedestrians. Skateboard eventually gave up as he slowly moved near Boombox, who had his headphones in to listen to his favourite hits.
"Man, what is wrong with them these days," Skateboard whispered as his friend took his headphones out, "they just straight up ignored me,"
Boombox thought for a while before replying to his red and confused friend.
"Aren't those the guys who you kicked up some dirt on?"
Skateboard blinked before letting out a laugh. A smile stretched on Boombox's face before he laughed with his best friend.
"Oh yeah! I completely forgot about that!" Skateboard chuckled, calming himself down, "but you got to admit it. It was funny as hell!"
"Yeah- Wait, Skate! The bus is here!"
The silver bus slowed down at the station and stopped right in front of them. A glowing sign clearly marked 'Crossroads' at the front. Skateboard smiled, climbing aboard the bus. The bus driver raised his eyebrow at Skateboard and Boombox.
"Well, it's nothing more than the trouble-making duo, eh?" the bus driver smiled as Skateboard dropped a coin in the box, "where are you two heading off next?"
"Don't make me cough out the obvious," Skateboard smiled back, "to the Crossroads!"
