The nondescript conference room door felt cool against Harper's palm as she adjusted her grip, contemplating the brass plaque that boldly announced the office of Erin Strauss.
The reputation preceding the woman suggested she was formidable, rigid, and cold - attributes Harper was well accustomed to profiling.
With a gentle creak, the door opened, revealing the cavernous office within.
Strauss looked up from her desk, piercing cold blue eyes assessing Harper as she entered.
The air seemed to thicken with the palpable aura of authority surrounding Strauss.
"Agent Steele," Strauss said curtly, gesturing to a chair. "Sit."
Harper complied, sinking into the seat and meeting the stern gaze of the woman before her. Strauss wasted no time in getting to the point.
"I've been following your work with Interpol closely. Impressive. I have an offer for you - a position with the BAU."
Harper arched an eyebrow, her mind already whirring with possibilities. "Why the sudden interest, Chief Strauss?"
"Strauss. Call me Strauss,"
she corrected, her tone sharp. "I need someone with your skills. We're expanding our collaboration with Interpol, and your expertise is required."
Harper's mind raced. This was a chance to delve into her parents' murder investigation further, an opportunity she had been waiting for.
"And what's the catch?"
Strauss leaned back, her fingers steepled.
"No catch. We need you to start immediately. I'm also offering you a shot at Unit Chief in the future.
A chance to climb the ranks."
Harper considered the offer carefully, the weight of potential truths hanging in the air. "I accept," she said finally, her decision made. "When do I start?"
"Monday. Be prepared."
As Harper left Strauss's office, the door clicked shut behind her, sealing an unspoken pact.
