Summary:

—————————————————

Izuku isn't a clumsy person, and Nezu keeps his campus pristine, so why did he trip when he first entered through the hallowed gates of UA? Was it just a mistake, or is there more than what meets the eye?

And why, exactly, does one of the most renowned Agent Heroes have such a Combat-biased heroics exam? And perhaps just as importantly, why has no one questioned that?

The entrance exam for UA comes much quicker than any of them were ready for. Before they really know it, Izuku, Hitoshi, Mei-chan, and Neito are standing at the oversized gates of the top hero school in Japan - Shouto ended up taking the recommendation exam despite hating his father's influence and was practically guaranteed a spot, but the others still needed to take theirs. Once they all meet up at the gate, Izuku arriving last and receiving hugs and headpats (and maybe a peck from Hitoshi), they walk in, practically vibrating with excitement.

And Izuku trips.

No matter what his teachers and classmates may claim, he isn't clumsy. He attracts trouble and is incredibly chaotic, sure, but that's different from being clumsy . Izuku actually has a great sense of balance and decent spatial awareness, and only falls when he's deliberately tripped. And there's no one directly around him aside from his three friends - none of which would trip him. So who?

Hitoshi catches him before he can fall with a short exclamation of surprise. "Careful there, Izu. Don't want you falling for anyone but your boys," Neito says snidely, stopping a couple paces ahead and looking over his shoulder at them.

Mei-chan stops where she is as well, from where she had been skipping ahead and turns on her heel, spreading her arms wide. "Come on, slow-pokes! We're gonna be late!" she exclaims brightly, yellow eyes glinting in the early morning light. "I've got pro-heroes to impress and babies to make, let's go!"

Izuku stares intently at the ground, registering his friends' impatience, but needing to figure out what tripped him. "Izu? You ok?" Hitoshi says - Izuku will never get over the sound of his voice or the way it feels vibrating in his chest and throat - making sure he's balanced before pulling away.

"Yea," he replies absentmindedly, crouching down and running his hand on the ground. "You can go ahead if you want, guys. Just checking something real quick."

"You sure?" Neito asks, turning more towards them. "I wanted to get to the exam early so I can get a good seat, but I can wait."

"Well, I need to split from y'all anyways, so I'll go now!" Mei-chan says. "Meet you here after! You better have stories, cuz I sure will!" She skips off, excitement palpable and infectious. Though that may just be to Izuku, Neito, and Hitoshi, because everyone else keeps their distance, but it's more their loss for distancing themselves than hers for being happy.

Izuku only pays half attention to the replies, instead focusing on the neatly cobbled road, feeling the even bricks rough under his fingers, until he runs into a single brick, slightly raised and it gives just a little at his touch. He grins - a little too much teeth, eyes a tad too narrow - and lets out a curious sound. "It feels like a button," Izuku mutters so quietly he's unsure if Hitoshi can hear him. "I'm sure. I don't want you to be late," he says, looking through his lashes to the tall boy, then over to his blond friend. "I need to see what this does."
