Original Network: Netflix tvNAs usual, I will start with the casting. When I hear a kind and cute but strong lady, I imagine Park Bo Young! This is different then her previous cliche supernatural dramas like SWDBS, DAYS, etc. The overall plot of this drama seemed like a breath of fresh air. I have watched It's okay to not be okay before which took place in a similar setting(but countryside), and I loved it.
The plot revolved around Da Eun(a nurse), who is the kindest and sweetest person on the planet. Her mentor asks her to transfers to psych ward and being the naive girl she is, she thinks it's for her betterment, (turns out that the mentor was just trying to get rid of her because she's too kind.) and transferring her to psych ward which lacks manpower seems a perfect solution for it.
But good for everyone, the new people are so much better(not saying that her ex-staff was downright bad, they just weren't for her), she makes mistakes and learns from them, makes friends here and grows, helps her patients and colleagues.
Yoon Woo Jin on the other hand plays a character of a doctor Go Yoon, a proctologist/ colorectal surgeon, he balances the plot with his humour and easy going nature. As a protagonist his love and support for Jung Da Eun stays a constant.
When Da Eun is diagnosed with Depression, she is in denial (like most of the people). She has a hard time accepting that now she's on the other side of the spectrum, but with the help of her dear ones she gets better.
This drama has portrayed so many taboos that people have against mental illnesses in general. It has also shown how difficult it can get for people working as nurses. A illness can happen to anyone regardless of their status. I like how it focuses on all the nurses and doctors and represent their journeys too as they move ahead with the series.
There's this one episode that has been ingrained in my heart, it's when a patient pretends to be sick again. At first, I was confused, why would a person want to be sick again? but as the story went on, I realised, on our way to healing, there are times when we miss the comfort of being in that cocoon. It's just that some people give in the temptation to be comfortable and some people stay strong and come to the brighter side. The realization made me cry because it felt too close to home.
Life happens, it throws shit at us, and even at our lowest, universe won't give up on you! You'll find the way out! You'll find your people! if not now then later, but I want you to believe that you will!
A few quotes
"There's only one way to get rid of anxiety. Finding one's own safety mechanism. Someone you can let in. Someone who you can go to for help. One that will offer you company when you need it. To find a hole to breathe through in the monotony of the daily grind." – Song Yuchan
"All illnesses are caused by loss. You may have lost what you cherished the most. Or you may have lost yourself. Or maybe what you've lost is the memory of happy days. At times like these, we have to rely on something that seems quite old-fashioned, really. It's just a little thing called hope. And we're all here, searching, in order to find it. That cliched thing called hope." – Nurse Jung Da Eun
"There's no guarantee you'll pass, even if you try your best. But it's hard to quit when you've tried so long. It's like passing must be within your reach somehow. And then you just get trapped in that cycle." – Kim Seo Wan
"In some ways, though, living in the present can be the same as standing on the blade of a knife since the future is yet to come, and the past has already gone by. We stand on the blade of a knife called the present." – Dr. Im Hyeok Soo
That's it from my side! I'll be back with another review!
