"The Big Bang Theory" writer/creator Bill Prady told Variety that the female lead, "Katie," was originally a "street-hardened, tough-as-nails woman with a vulnerable interior."

They were surprised when the original pilot audience wanted the "mean lady" to stay away from the "sweet guys."

So the show runners created Penny, and added two more of those "sweet guys," Raj and Howard.
