Imaginary Cats

"I sat calmly

on the edge of the cliff

gazing at the desolate sea."

LAYLA

"I know it's only been

two days, but friends

always miss each other!"

Claudia said

letting go of me.

I smiled

unsure of what

to say.

So we strolled

down the hallways

in comfortable silence

watching as

the crowd parted

for us.

A single

perfect

moment.

We walked

into the classroom

right as

the bell rang.

Our Social Studies

teacher loomed over us

tall and intimidating

as his stomach rolled

over his belt.

"You both are

late!" He announced

and I felt Claudia

trembling next to me.

I felt a small

infinitely large

incredibly small

spark

of

anger.

How dare he

a man of seventy years

attempt to terrify

my Claudia!?

I opened my mouth

about to spew profanities

but instead Mr. Duke

let out

a hearty laugh.

"Haha!" Mr. Duke

gave us an eerie grin.

"Next time, both of you

will be sent to the

principal's office!"

This odd routine

was beginning to wear

at the class's patience

and was almost more than

I could bear.

I gave Claudia

a gentle nudge

guiding her to her seat.

All the while

Mr. Duke wouldn't budge.

I say down at my seat

watching Claudia intently

as she yawned once

twice

three times.

I hid my own yawns

doodling cats

in my notebook.

Claudia and I

were both cat people.

She wanted

an oriental longhair

 and I wanted

a Scottish fold.

Happy times

with our

imaginary cats.
