“What’s wrong, Scout? You’ve been awfully quiet.”
“I... Found something earlier. I think you guys need to see it.”
“What is this?”
“It was on Harry’s desk.”
. . .
“It almost looks kind of like a—”
“Suicide note. Yeah.”
. . .
“Well, don’t be silly. It’s not really a... That.”
. . .
“Right?”
“Louis, I know you said to—”
“Does Harry know you have this?”
“Um. No. I told him I tidied up all the shit on his desk yesterday and he completely flipped on me. I was worried he was hiding something, so I looked again this morning and found this.”
“Did he tell you it was okay to go through his things?”
“Well... I mean, no. He actually yelled at me for it. That’s what he got so angry over. But guys, listen—”
“You need to put this back.”
. . .
“But... Louis, this is really concerning.”
“Put it back, Scout.”
“Louis, you read it too. You know what it looks like.”
“It looks like our best friend venting his feelings and saying that he loves us. I’d say that’s not worrying at all. In fact, it’s—”
“Louis, fucking open your eyes, will you? Stop pretending like nothing’s wrong because something clearly is! This isn’t the kind of thing someone just writes out of the blue for no apparent reason.”
“You don’t know what it is either! It could mean nothing. It could be no big deal.”
“Guys, can we just—”
“Shut up, Liam! I bet you agree with him, don’t you? I bet you all think it’s nothing, don’t you?”
“Well, we don’t know anything for sure. I don’t think we should jump to any—”
“Zayn, I’m not so sure about that. I think you’re right ta be worried, Scout.”
“Thank you, Niall. At least someone is being reasonable.”
“You’re the one being unreasonable!”
“Louis, you’re completely ignoring the truth here! I know you’d rather think our friend is okay, but the reality is that he’s not, he’s just not okay. I don’t think he’s been okay for a while.”
. . .
“Well, then what am I meant to do?”
“Louis, please don’t cry. I didn’t—”
“No, Scout, tell me what it is I’m meant to do for him. Since you apparently seem to know what’s best for Harry.”
“Look, I just... I just think we all should sit him down and make him talk to us. Don’t let him run away from the situation. He needs to face whatever it is he’s dealing with. He needs help and he needs us to give it to him.”
. . .
“Okay, Scout. We’ll try it your way.”
“Thank you.”
“But if this backfires and he pushes us away again, I want you to remember that you chose to do this. You.”
. . .
“Okay, Louis.”
