ruby turned to look at valerie. she picked her up and pulled her to the living room. valerie's eyes fluttered open, and she tried to push ruby off.

"no, no, no." she croaked. wriggling around. ruby put her on the couch, sitting down in front of her. "ruby i don't know what's wrong with you, but i do know that you're still in there. please, please, please do not do this. this isn't you, ruby, and i know i sound so stupid right now, you know -" she laughed"- like those girls who try to get their boyfriend to not right some other guy! this isn't you, josh! you know? but this really isn't actually you." she took a breath.

ruby began to hum a tune. the song she'd been singing all night.

"ruby, listen to me!" she shouted. "i know you're very upset for some reason, that is don't know, but i do know that you would've never done this to your friends, you can stop now you know! we can go to the police, tell them you had a little too much to drink, you'll get off easy! i think.." she rambled on, trying anything to keep ruby from not killing her just a little longer. she knew the police were on their way, she called them earlier.

"stop." valerie immediately closed her mouth. "i won't hurt you," ruby said. valerie looked confused. "im not going to hurt you," she repeated, slower. she didn't sound like ruby. well she did, obviously, but she didn't.

"really?" valerie asked, smiling. "you'll go to the police with me?" ruby shook her head, and valerie's smile dropped. "what? why not?"

"because, you deserve to live, not me. i don't know why the curse doesn't work on you. but i can't bring myself to hurt you. it might be because.. well, i love you, valerie. i love you so much," ruby whispered the last part.

"ruby, i love you too. that's why i need to-"

"no. valerie, i love you. i didn't know what it was at first, but that night at the game. i realized how much i really do love you." valerie shook her head.

"no, i know. i love you too, okay? let's just go to the police and fix this, please?" valerie went to get up, but ruby didn't. "ruby, come on."

"you know that saying? till death due us part, right?" ruby looked down at the razor in her hand. "goodbye, valerie." the sound of distant sirens was heard as ruby brought the razor up to her throat, slitting it.

"ruby, no!" valerie screaming, falling down next to her. she tried to hold her throat closed, as she pulled her into her lap. "someone help!" she sobbed.

the police came rushing in, grabbing valerie and pulling her out of the house. her vision was blurred with tears as they brought her over to an ambulance and someone started to inspect her hair.

she had to stay at the hospital that night. she didn't sleep much, all she could think about was ruby.

the next morning, a detective walked in, followed by the sheriff goode and her father.

"ms. southerland, we have a few things we need to discuss with you," the detective started. her dad didn't say anything, he didn't even look at her.

"if it's about last night, im not rea-"

"it's not," sheriff goode cut her off. "it's certainly about you, though," he chuckled. valerie looked at her dad, who finally made eye contact with her.

"what's going on?"

"well, ms. sou-"

"valerie. call me valerie, please." the detective nodded.

"valerie," he started. "mr. southerland here is not your father. after we inspected the blood from your head last night we noticed that your dna did not match up." valerie looked confused. "i know it may be a lot to take in, b-"

"you inspected my blood? how is that not, like, illegal?" valerie shouted. "and obviously it doesn't match up, im adopted." she rolled her eyes at their stupidness.

"please do not interrupt me again." he had a stern look on his face, valerie could tell he was angry. but she was too. she lost all her friends last night, all of them. she didn't have time for this stupidity. "your dna matches w-"

"can you speak up? i can't quite hear you." she smiled. sheriff goode looked between the two, sighing. the detective seemed very tired of her, and gave goode a pointed look.

"sweetheart, your father wants you back. i agreed id only care for you temporarily, and now it's time to give you back to who you belong to," her father spoke, sounding just as upset as she was about this.

"belong to? im sorry, no." valerie shook her head. her father sighed.

"oh, but you don't have a choice. once your able to leave, you're coming home with me." sheriff goode smiled. her brows furrowed.

"what do you have to do with th- oh my god."

so valerie went home with sheriff goode after a couple of weeks. she didn't speak to anyone, she didn't eat anything. she locked herself in her room all day and only came out to use the bathroom and shower.

and of course, when she had to go to therapy.

her guidance counselor said that it was probably because of the shock from the situation. that's what everyone called it, no one said ruby around her.

goode tried to homeschool her, as he was told that'd be best considering the fact she wouldn't get out of bed. that didn't work, she wouldn't speak to him. so he signed her up for virtual classes.

exactly 5 months after the accident, valerie was found dead in her bedroom. she slit her own throat with a razor, all that was left in her note was 5 words.

"till death due us part."
