valerie fell asleep in the back of eleanor's car, letting out soft snores and occasionally little sighs. after the two had many sleepovers, ruby learned that valerie would often make little sounds in her sleep, from sighs to mumbling things no one could understand. she found it adorable.

she watched as valerie's shoulders rose and fell as she breathed, her legs pulled up in the seat as she leaned on the door.

"ruby," eleanor cleared her throat. ruby jumped a bit, turning to eleanor. "who's the guy you like?" she tried to clear the silence, keeping her eyes on the road.

"huh?" ruby's eyebrows furrowed together. she was confused, as she didn't like a guy. she didn't even like guys in general. the real reason she dated issac was to get her mind off the one she truly liked.

it was a bitch move, and she knew that. but it didn't matter anyway, he cheated so he obviously didn't like her either.

"you said you liked someone, who is it?" she continued, smiling.

"oh.. um- yeah," ruby nervously laughed. she tried to come up with something. if she lied now, eleanor would just find out later. like she was about to find out the truth now.

"um, ruby..? you don't have to tell me if you don't want to." eleanor glanced over, and ruby let out a sigh of relief. "and.. you know I wouldn't care if it wasn't a boy."

"what do you mean?" had she seen the way she looked at girls? or maybe the way she reacted when boys flirted with her? she had to know something, she wouldn't have just said that.

"I know a lot of people give girls shit for liking other girls, boys too, but I think it's stupid. just wanted you to know that if you happened to like a girl, I'd support you." she smiled. ruby felt like the weight of the world was lifted off her shoulders and she let out an airy laugh.

"aww, el. are you getting soft on me?" she decided to change the subject. even if eleanor would support her, she didn't know if she was ready to tell her just yet.

"god, I take back what I just said." she rolled her eyes, laughing. "I'd support everyone but you." ruby playfully shoved her.

valerie groaned, sitting up a bit and rubbing her eyes. she looked around the room in confusion for a second, before realizing where she was.

once she confirmed that she wasn't kidnapped, she got out the bed and walked over to ruby's phone. dialing the number, she waited in silence for her father to pick up.

"hello?" her father spoke, his southern accent thick. there were many things valerie was greatful she didn't inherit from her parents, and their accent was one of them.

"hey, dad. sorry I wasn't at home this morning," she started, holding the phone in between her ear and shoulder so she could pick at her chipped nail polish. "I fell asleep after the game, and since you weren't home ruby took me to her place." she waited for his response, silently praying he would be okay with it.

"alright, but could you just- just, make sure to call me sooner next time?" she nodded, even though he couldn't see her.

"I will, dad. don't worry. ruby will probably drive me to school, love you." he didn't say anything back, he just hung up. she let out a huff, putting the phone back and leaving the room to find ruby.

she stopped by the bathroom to check on her nose, which was better now. the purple shades were gone, and the dark red turned to a light pink. doing a little cheer, she left the bathroom.

"oh, val! it's so good to see you!" ruby's mother, ms. lane, pulled her into a hug. she hugged back, flipping ruby off behind her mother's back as she made fun of her.

"I missed you, ms. lane." valerie smiled, sitting down next to ruby.

"I missed you too, sweetheart," she replied softly. "oh! was your father alright with you staying? I could give him a call if you'd like." she went to grab the phone, but valerie shook her head.

"no, it's alright. I already spoke with him. he said it's alright." once ms. lane turned around, ruby shoved valerie. valerie slapped ruby's arm, and the two bickered quietly.

"mom, we're gonna head back to my room." ruby grabbed valerie's hand to lead her out the kitchen, and valerie's face turned a dark red.

she closed the door behind her, and valerie immediately pushed ruby.

"you're a dick!" she whisper yelled, the two laughing.

"want me to kiss you to make it better?" ruby threw her arms around valerie, pretending she was going to kiss her. valerie pushed her arms off, and ruby kissed her forehead.

valerie turned away to hide her face, but ruby saw anyway.

"aww, did I make you blush?" ruby teased. valerie's face got even more red as she rolled her eyes.

"no- no, shut up," she muttered and ruby laughed. "let's.. watch a movie, we still have an hour before we need to get ready," she tried to change the subject.

"don't you change the subject valerie grace!" ruby pointed a finger at her friend, and valerie pushed her hand down. "plus, my mom won't be home tomorrow night so I'm inviting you, and some others, over and we'll watch movies then- unless your busy, we could, like, watch a movie together another night."

"no, tomorrow night's fine, besides the fact that I have to wait a whole day," valerie laughed. ruby plopped down on the bed, patting the spot next to her so valerie could sit too, she did.

"you're still blushing," ruby declared with a smile, and valerie groaned.
