I woke up to the gentle touch of Mina, my best friend since forever. She had this habit of sneaking into my room for morning cuddles, a routine that felt as familiar as the sunrise. We must have dozed off, losing track of time. I glanced at the clock and realized we had stolen a couple more hours of sleep. As I stirred, I gently nudged Mina awake. "Hey sleepyhead, how was your sleep?" "I asked, my voice still tinged with drowsiness.
Mina groggily opened her eyes, a playful smile forming. "Headache Is a souvenir from last night, but I'm surviving," she replied, rubbing her eyes. After a lazy stretch, we caught the tempting aroma of breakfast wafting from downstairs- a delightful creation by the maids. Racing each other to the kitchen, we couldn't help but giggle like mischievous kids, much to the amusement of the maids who watched us with fond smiles.
Over plates of delicious food, we chatted and laughed, our playful banter echoing through the house. Even in our mid-20's, Mina and I retained the childlike joy of shared moments, making everyday an adventure. I twirled a strand of my hair as I took a bite of my toast, glancing at Mina across the table. "So, what's on your agenda for today, Mina?" Mina looked up from her plate, a thoughtful expression on her face. "I have a meeting with my manager later. There's talk about a new show they want me to be part of."
"Ooh, exciting!" I grinned. "What's it about?" "It's another drama, but you know," Mina sighed, "I love acting, but the constant pairing with men can be a bit exhausting. Sometimes, I wish I could have a female co-star, you know?" I chuckled. Raising an eyebrow. "Mina, you're so gay."
Mina rolled her eyes, but a playful smile crept onto her face. "Okay, maybe a little. But can you blame me? It would be nice to have a change." I reached over and patted her hand. "Well, whatever happens, you know I'm your number one fan. I love seeing you on my TV, and I'm so proud of my best friend." Mina blushed, appreciating the support. "Thanks, Sana. Your words mean a lot to me."
"Oh, speaking of today," I continued, "It's my dad's birthday. He surprisingly just wants a quiet celebration. This is so unlike him and I'm a little scared of why all of a sudden, he just wants me and my sister at the house for tonight." The looming dinner with Jihyo and Dad started to gnaw at me like a persistent ache. Anxiety gripped my chest, and I absentmindedly stirred my food, lost in a whirlwind of thoughts. Mina, sensing my unease, joined me with a comforting smile. "Sana, it'll be okay. Just breathe. It's a chance to reconnect, and Jihyo will be there for support," Mina reassured me, her voice a soothing balm. I sighed, "I know, Mina but you remember how it is with Dad. Ever since Mom passed away, it's like we've been speaking different languages, and the distance just keeps growing."
Mina nodded, understanding the pain I harbored. "People grieve differently, Sana. It takes time, but tonight might be an opportunity to bridge some of those gaps. Besides, you won't be alone. Jihyo will be right there with you." Despite Mina's comforting words, a knot of apprehension lingered. After breakfast, Mina got ready and left for her meeting, leaving me alone in the quiet house. The solitude allowed my thoughts to run wild, replaying memories of a time when our family felt whole, before grief fractured the bonds that once held us together.
As the hours passed by, the ticking of the clock echoed in the empty rooms, amplifying my nervous anticipation for the impending dinner. I couldn't shake the memories of the past, the wounds that hadn't fully healed, and the fear of facing those emotions. Yet, somewhere beneath the anxiety, Mina's words encouragement provided a glimmer of hope that tonight might bring a chance for healing and connection.
