Wolf Moon

Brushing the last few wrinkles from her dress, Mia gave herself a once-over in the mirror. Satisfied with her look, she grabbed her phone and snapped a quick picture of her outfit, sending it to her best friend, Lydia Martin.

It was the first day of their sophomore year, and Mia had already gotten an early start. Between her strong academics and her solid place in the social scene, the principal had asked her to come to school early to show around a new student. Their schedules were almost identical, and Mia was happy to help out. She knew being the new kid in a small town like Beacon Hills could be rough.

Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down to see Lydia had approved of her outfit with a simple text: Perfect. Mia smiled to herself, glad that Lydia's high standards had been met.

"Mia? You coming?" came a voice from her doorway.

She turned to see her brother, Stiles, leaning against the frame, looking as impatient as ever.

"I'm driving myself today," Mia said, tossing her phone into her bag. "Dad said I could use his car. I'm giving the new kid a tour, so I thought I'd be nice and grab us coffee."

Stiles raised an eyebrow, mildly impressed. "Look at you, being all responsible."

Mia smirked. "Yeah, well, not all of us can live on Red Bull and leftover pizza."

"Fair point," he conceded. "I've got to meet Scott. He said he had something to show me."

Mia's heart skipped at the mention of Scott, her brother's best friend—the one she'd had a hopeless crush on since seventh grade. She tried to keep her voice casual. "What did you two get up to last night?"

Stiles paused, glancing away. "Uh, nowhere. Why?"

Mia crossed her arms, not buying it for a second. "You followed Dad, didn't you?"

He rolled his eyes, trying to act like it was no big deal. "Maybe."

Mia shook her head with a soft laugh. Of course he had. Stiles had always been the more curious one, always diving headfirst into trouble, even when it meant getting himself grounded.

"Well, try not to get arrested before lunch, okay?" she teased.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll see you later," Stiles said with a wave as he headed off.

Mia grabbed her bag and made one last sweep of her room, ensuring she had everything she needed for the day. As she locked up behind her, she couldn't help but feel a little excited. Maybe this year, things with Scott would finally change. Maybe this year, he'd notice her the way she'd always noticed him.

With a deep breath and a determined smile, Mia headed out the door, ready to take on her first day.
