Mia sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window as Jackson pulled his car into the school parking lot. The winter formal was in full swing, and it seemed like most of the students were already inside, music and laughter spilling out from the building. Despite the lively atmosphere, Mia couldn't shake her mood. She wasn't with the person she wanted to be with, and the night already felt like a letdown.
Jackson, dressed sharply in a tux, pulled out a small bottle of vodka from the glove compartment. He took a quick sip before offering it to her.
"Want some?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Mia wrinkled her nose and shook her head. "Um, no thank you. I don't drink."
Jackson shrugged, taking another sip before tucking the bottle away. He seemed relaxed, almost too relaxed for Mia's taste, and she could feel the growing sense of discomfort in her chest.
As she smoothed out her dress and checked her lipstick in the mirror, she hesitated before asking, "Do you know if Scott's coming?"
Jackson glanced at her, his tone indifferent. "Nah, I heard he's not allowed. Academic probation or something."
Mia's heart sank a little further. Scott wasn't coming. She knew things between them had been strange lately, but the hope of seeing him tonight had still lingered in the back of her mind. Now, that hope was gone.
"Right," she said softly, her voice barely audible.
Jackson stepped out of the car, straightening his jacket, and Mia followed suit, glancing at her reflection one last time before shutting the door. She wasn't sure how she was going to get through this night. All she wanted was for it to be over.
The dance was in full swing when they walked in. Glittering lights reflected off the ceiling, and the music pumped through the speakers, energizing the room. Students crowded the dance floor, laughing and swaying to the beat. But Mia felt completely out of place.
She walked beside Jackson as they entered, but it didn't take long for him to get swept up with his lacrosse buddies. Within minutes, Jackson had left her to chat with his friends, leaving Mia standing awkwardly near the edge of the dance floor.
She spotted Allison dancing with a tall boy from the lacrosse team—Isaac. The two of them moved together, laughing easily. Mia smiled faintly at the sight of her friend enjoying herself, but it only deepened the ache in her chest.
A few feet away, she saw Stiles awkwardly twirling Lydia around, his face lit up with joy. It was endearing, and she couldn't help but smile at her brother's attempts to impress Lydia.
But seeing all her friends happy only made Mia feel lonelier. She could still feel the weight of her heartbreak over Scott, the sting of his silence cutting deeper with every passing moment. She had hoped tonight might give her some clarity, but instead, it only seemed to amplify how lost she felt.
